About This Cigar
A premium Cuban cigar from Romeo y Julieta.
Tasting Notes
Rich, complex Cuban flavors with notes of earth, cedar, leather, and spice.
What Most People Don’t Get About the Romeo No 2
Look, I’m gonna be straight with you right off the bat. Most folks think the romeo no 2 is just another fancy Cuban trying to coast on the Romeo y Julieta name. That’s complete nonsense, and frankly, it tells me they’ve never actually sat down with one of these beauties for a proper session.
I’ve been smoking Cubans since the late ’90s (back when you had to know a guy who knew a guy), and the Romeo No.2 has been in my rotation for damn near fifteen years now. It’s not flashy. Doesn’t have the marketing muscle of a Cohiba or the cult following of a Montecristo No.2. But that’s exactly what makes it so special.
The tubo packaging? Yeah, I know some purists roll their eyes at it. “Oh, it’s for tourists,” they’ll say. Wrong again. Those aluminum tubes are actually brilliant for aging and transport, and I’ll fight anyone who says otherwise. More on that later.
First Impressions: Looks Can Be Deceiving
When you slide this torpedo out of its tube, don’t expect fireworks. The wrapper’s usually a nice medium brown—Colorado, if you want to get technical about it—but it’s not gonna win any beauty contests. I’ve seen some with slightly mottled coloring that would make newer smokers nervous. Don’t be.
The construction though? That’s where Romeo y Julieta shows they still know what they’re doing. These feel substantial in your hand without being chunky. The draw test usually passes with flying colors, and I can’t remember the last time I had burn issues with a Romeo No.2. (Can’t say the same about some other “premium” Cubans I’ve tried recently, but I won’t name names…)
Here’s something interesting I noticed over the years: the ones that come in tubos tend to have better moisture content than their naked counterparts. Makes sense when you think about it—that aluminum shell is doing its job.
The Smoke: A Journey Worth Taking
Forget all that “first third, second third, final third” nonsense you read in most reviews. Real cigars don’t follow textbook rules, and neither does the romeo no 2.
Right off the light, you’re getting this beautiful creamy sweetness. Not cloying, not artificial—just this natural tobacco sweetness that reminds me why I fell in love with Cuban cigars in the first place. There’s cedar there too, which makes perfect sense given Romeo’s aging process.
About twenty minutes in (and I’m a slow smoker, so your mileage may vary), things start getting interesting. The sweetness doesn’t disappear, but it starts dancing with these earthy notes. Sometimes I pick up leather, sometimes it’s more like fresh soil after rain. Depends on the specific stick, depends on the day, depends on my mood.
The middle section—and this is where the Romeo No.2 really shines—develops this complexity that sneaks up on you. I was smoking one last summer on my buddy Mike’s deck in Colorado, and we both just stopped talking for about ten minutes. The cigar had developed this incredible nutty character, almost like roasted almonds, with just enough spice to keep things lively.
That’s the thing about romeo no 2 cigars—they’re conversational without being demanding. You can think while you smoke them. Hell, some of my best ideas have come to me with one of these between my fingers.
The final act? That’s where opinions divide, and here’s where I might ruffle some feathers. A lot of reviewers talk about how it “builds to a crescendo” or whatever. Honestly? Sometimes it does, sometimes it doesn’t. I’ve had Romeo No.2s that stayed mellow and creamy right to the nub, and others that developed this beautiful coffee bitterness in the last inch that perfectly complemented everything that came before.
Is that inconsistency a bug or a feature? I say it’s part of the charm. Cubans aren’t supposed to be factory-perfect. They’re supposed to have personality.
What I Actually Drink With These
Forget the generic “pairs well with cognac” advice you see everywhere. Let me tell you what actually works in the real world.
My go-to pairing? Macallan 18. I know, I know—it’s not cheap, but the sherry influence in that scotch plays beautifully with the natural sweetness of the romeo no 2. The smoke brings out vanilla notes in the whisky that you might miss otherwise.
On a budget? Try Glenfiddich 15. The solera aging process gives it enough complexity to stand up to the cigar without fighting it. Plus it’s actually available most places, unlike some of the fancy stuff people recommend.
Coffee works too, but be picky. I’ve had great experiences with a proper Cuban espresso (the irony isn’t lost on me), but regular American coffee tends to clash. The acidity fights with the tobacco in ways that aren’t pleasant.
Beer? Controversial opinion coming up: most beer pairings with cigars are terrible. But I’ve had success with Chimay Blue with a Romeo No.2. The Belgian yeast character somehow works. Don’t ask me why.
Water’s underrated too. Sometimes you want to taste the cigar, not what you’re drinking with it.
Who Should Smoke This (And Who Shouldn’t)
The Romeo No.2 is perfect for intermediate smokers who want to understand what Cuban cigars are actually about. It’s complex enough to be interesting, but not so intense that it’ll knock you on your ass if you’re not ready for it.
If you’re coming from Dominican or Nicaraguan cigars and thinking about making the jump to Cubans, this is your gateway drug. It’s got that distinctive Cuban character without the challenging intensity of something like a Partagás Serie P No.2.
Experienced smokers? Yeah, there’s plenty here for you too. It’s one of those cigars that reveals new things as your palate develops. I’ve been smoking these for years and still discover new notes.
Who should skip it? Honestly, if you need your cigars to hit like a freight train, look elsewhere. This isn’t a power smoke. It’s not trying to prove anything. Some guys need that pepper blast, that full-bodied intensity. Fair enough—different strokes.
Also, if you’re the type who gets hung up on burn issues or wrapper imperfections, Cuban cigars in general might not be for you. The Romeo No.2 is well-made, but it’s not going to be as cosmetically perfect as some Dominican premiums.
Storage and Insider Tips
Here’s something most people don’t realize: those tubos are actually fantastic for aging. I’ve got Romeo No.2s from 2018 that have been sitting in their original aluminum tubes, and they’ve developed this incredible depth that the fresh ones just don’t have.
The trick is to leave them sealed if you’re planning to age them. Once you open a tubo, the aging process changes. Not better or worse, just different.
Storage temperature matters more with these than with some other Cubans. I keep mine at 65°F and 68% humidity. Any warmer and they get oily, any cooler and they seem to lose some of that natural sweetness.
When you’re ready to smoke one, let it acclimate for at least 30 minutes outside the tube. I learned this the hard way after rushing into a few that burned unevenly.
Cut placement is crucial with the torpedo tip. Too much and you’ll get a loose draw, too little and you’ll struggle. I aim for about 2-3mm from the tip. Your cutter matters too—invest in a good one if you’re going to smoke these regularly.
The Value Question
Let’s talk money. Romeo No.2s aren’t cheap, but they’re not insanely expensive either (at least by Cuban standards). You’re looking at somewhere between $15-25 depending on where you buy and whether you’re getting singles or a box.
Is it worth it? Compared to what? If you’re used to $5 gas station cigars, this might seem outrageous. If you regularly smoke $30+ premiums, this feels like a steal.
I think they punch above their weight class. You’re getting Cuban tobacco, solid construction, and real complexity for less than you’d pay for comparable sticks from other premium Cuban brands. The tubo packaging adds value too—try traveling with regular cigars vs. ones in aluminum tubes and you’ll see what I mean.
Common Questions I Get Asked
How long do these take to smoke? Plan on 60-90 minutes if you’re doing it right. I’m usually closer to 90, but I’m a slow smoker. Rushing a Romeo No.2 is like speed-reading poetry—you’ll miss the point.
Do they need aging? They’re good fresh, but they’re better with some time on them. If you can wait 6-12 months, do it. If not, don’t sweat it.
Are tubos really better than regular boxes? Different, not necessarily better. Tubos are more convenient and arguably better for long-term storage. Box cigars might have slightly better aging potential in bulk. It’s personal preference.
How do I know if I got a fake? Buy from reputable sources. Period. The fakes are getting scary good, but they usually reveal themselves in the smoke. Real Romeo No.2s have a consistency of flavor that’s hard to replicate.
Final Thoughts
The Romeo y Julieta Romeo No.2 isn’t trying to be the best Cuban cigar ever made. It’s not competing with Behikes or aged Cohibas. What it is, is an honest, well-made smoke that delivers everything you want from a Cuban without any pretension.
I’ve shared these with newcomers and seasoned veterans, and both groups appreciate what it brings to the table. It’s approachable without being simple, complex without being challenging.
In a world of flashy marketing and inflated reputations, the romeo no 2 just quietly does its job. Sometimes that’s exactly what you need.
Will it change your life? Probably not. Will it give you a damn fine hour of smoking? Absolutely. And sometimes, that’s enough.
