A premium Cuban cigar from Romeo y Julieta.

Tasting Notes

Rich, complex Cuban flavors with notes of earth, cedar, leather, and spice.

The Moment I Knew Romeo y Julieta Coronas Were Something Special

It was 2003, maybe 2004 – hell, after two decades of smoking, some of those early years blur together – and I was sitting on a buddy’s porch in Miami. Mike had just gotten back from a “business trip” to the Bahamas (wink wink), and he pulls out this box of Romeo y Julieta Coronas. Not the romeo y julieta petit corona that everyone seems to gravitate toward these days, but the full-sized Coronas. 5⅛ inches of pure Cuban craftsmanship.

I’ll be honest – up until that point, I was all about Cohiba and Montecristo. Thought Romeo y Julieta was maybe a bit… I don’t know, pedestrian? Boy, was I wrong. That first draw, with the Miami humidity hanging thick around us and the sun setting over the canal behind Mike’s house, completely changed my perspective on this marca. The smoke was creamy, elegant, and had this underlying complexity that just kept revealing itself layer by layer.

That’s the thing about Romeo y Julieta – they don’t punch you in the face with boldness like a Partagás might. Instead, they seduce you. Slowly. Deliberately.

First Impressions: The Look and Feel

When you first handle a Romeo y Julieta Corona, you’re immediately struck by the construction. I’ve probably smoked hundreds of these over the years (my wife would say thousands, but who’s counting?), and the consistency is remarkable. The wrapper – that gorgeous Colorado shade – has this silky texture that just feels right between your fingers.

The cap is usually perfect. Not too pointed, not too flat. You know what I mean if you’ve ever struggled with a poorly capped stick. The band, of course, is iconic. That red and gold design has been turning heads since 1875, and honestly, it never gets old. Sometimes I catch myself just staring at the damn thing before I light up.

One thing I’ve noticed over the years – and this might sound crazy – but you can almost predict how a Romeo Corona is going to smoke just by feeling the wrapper. The oils, the slight give when you press gently… it’s like reading tea leaves, but for cigars.

Pre-Light Ritual

I always do a cold draw test. Always. With Romeo Coronas, you’re usually looking at notes of cedar (that’s the aging talking), maybe some sweet hay, occasionally a hint of cocoa. If you’re getting harsh tobacco or nothing at all, put it back. Trust me on this one.

The foot aroma is where things get interesting. Good Romeo Coronas smell like a well-maintained humidor – that perfect blend of Spanish cedar and aged tobacco. Sometimes you’ll catch a whiff of something floral, almost perfume-like. That’s when you know you’ve got a good one.

The Flavor Journey: Not Your Typical Third-by-Third Breakdown

Look, I could give you the standard “first third, second third, final third” analysis that every cigar reviewer seems to do, but that’s not how I smoke. And it’s definitely not how Romeo Coronas reveal themselves.

Instead, let me tell you about the moments.

The initial light – if you’re doing it right with a wooden match or butane lighter (please tell me you’re not using a Zippo) – gives you this burst of sweetness. Almost like brown sugar or molasses. It’s fleeting, maybe three or four puffs, but it sets the tone for everything that follows.

Then comes what I call the “settling in” phase. This is where the Romeo Corona shows its breeding. The smoke becomes incredibly smooth, almost creamy. You’re getting cedar – lots of cedar – but it’s not overwhelming. There’s this underlying nuttiness, kind of like toasted almonds, that weaves in and out.

About an inch in (though it varies with humidity and how you’re smoking), something magical happens. The cigar opens up. Suddenly you’re tasting leather, maybe some coffee, sometimes even a hint of vanilla. This is where the romeo y julieta petit corona differs a bit – the smaller ring gauge concentrates these flavors more intensely, but the Corona gives you more time to explore them.

The middle section – and this is where Romeo y Julieta really shines – maintains this incredible balance. I’ve never had a Romeo Corona turn bitter on me. Ever. And believe me, I’ve smoked some real dogs from other manufacturers over the years.

As you get toward the final inch or so, things get interesting. The flavors intensify without becoming harsh. You might pick up some spice, maybe black pepper, but it’s always refined. Never aggressive.

A Word About Strength

Romeo Coronas are medium-bodied, maybe medium-plus if you’re smoking on an empty stomach (which I don’t recommend, by the way). They’re not going to knock you on your ass like a Bolivar, but they’re not lightweight either. Perfect for afternoon smoking or after a good meal.

What I Pair These With (And What Actually Works)

Over the years, I’ve tried Romeo Coronas with just about everything you can imagine. Some combinations work beautifully. Others… well, let’s just say I learned some lessons the hard way.

Coffee: This is probably the most obvious pairing, but it works for a reason. I’m partial to a good Cuban coffee (Café Bustelo will do in a pinch), but honestly, any medium to dark roast complements the nutty, cedary flavors perfectly. Avoid anything too acidic though – it’ll clash with the smoothness of the cigar.

Rum: Now we’re talking. A good aged rum and a Romeo Corona is like… well, it’s like being transported to Havana circa 1955. I’ve had great luck with Flor de Caña 12-year, Ron Zacapa 23, and if you can get your hands on it, Havana Club 15. The sweetness of the rum plays beautifully against the tobacco.

Scotch: This is where I might ruffle some feathers. A lot of guys swear by pairing Cuban cigars with single malts, but I think it’s often overkill. That said, a mild Highland scotch – something like Glenlivet 12 or Dalwhinnie 15 – can work. Just don’t go reaching for that Lagavulin; you’ll obliterate the subtle flavors of the Romeo.

Wine: Here’s my controversial take – red wine and Cuban cigars don’t always play well together. Too much tannin, too much competing complexity. But I’ve had some amazing experiences with a good aged Madeira or even a quality port. The sweetness bridges the gap beautifully.

Beer: Don’t laugh. A well-made stout or porter can be incredible with a Romeo Corona. The roasted malt flavors echo the coffee and chocolate notes in the tobacco. I’ve had great luck with Guinness, surprisingly, and with some of the craft stouts coming out of places like Stone Brewing.

Food Pairings

Romeo Coronas are perfect after-dinner cigars, but they’re also refined enough for late afternoon smoking. I’ve enjoyed them after everything from Cuban sandwiches (obviously) to prime rib dinners. The key is not to overpower your palate before lighting up.

Who Should Smoke These (And Who Should Skip Them)

Perfect for:

    • Newcomers to Cuban cigars who want to understand what the fuss is about
    • Experienced smokers looking for elegance over power
    • Anyone who appreciates balance and complexity
    • Business smoking (they’re impressive without being ostentatious)
    • Golfers (the even burn and manageable strength work great on the course)

Skip if:

    • You prefer full-bodied, knock-your-socks-off cigars
    • You’re looking for something with lots of spice and pepper
    • You need a quick smoke (these demand time and attention)
    • You’re on a tight budget (quality Cuban cigars ain’t cheap, folks)

Here’s something I probably shouldn’t admit – I’ve given Romeo Coronas to friends who claimed they didn’t like cigars, and converted more than a few. There’s something about the smoothness and approachability that seems to work even for reluctant smokers.

Storage Tips and Insider Knowledge

Alright, let’s talk about keeping these beauties in peak condition. Romeo y Julieta Coronas are more forgiving than some Cuban marcas, but they still deserve respect.

Humidity: I keep mine between 65-68% RH. Any higher and you risk the wrapper getting too oily; any lower and you’ll lose some of that signature smoothness. I learned this the hard way when I first started collecting – had a whole box dry out because I thought 60% was sufficient. It wasn’t.

Temperature: Steady is more important than perfect. I aim for around 68-70°F, but the key is avoiding fluctuations. That spare bedroom humidor might seem like a good idea until your HVAC starts cycling dramatically.

Aging: Here’s where it gets interesting. Fresh Romeo Coronas are good. Romeo Coronas with 3-5 years on them are sublime. The harsh edges (what few there are) completely disappear, and the complexity deepens considerably. I’ve got a few boxes from 2018 that I’m trying to resist diving into.

Box dates: Pay attention to them. I’ve noticed that Romeo Coronas from certain years smoke better than others. 2019 was a particularly good year, in my opinion. 2020… well, let’s just say even Cuban cigar production wasn’t immune to that year’s chaos.

A Few Quirks I’ve Noticed

Romeo Coronas sometimes need a bit of help staying lit, especially in humid conditions. Don’t be afraid to touch up the burn line if needed. It’s not a sign of poor construction – it’s just the nature of the blend.

Also, these cigars seem to smoke differently depending on the season. I swear they’re more complex in cooler weather, though that might just be my imagination (or the fact that I pay more attention when I’m not sweating my ass off).

Frequently Asked Questions

Q: How do Romeo Coronas compare to the petit corona size?

A: The romeo y julieta petit corona delivers similar flavors in a more concentrated package. It’s a great option if you want the Romeo experience but don’t have 90 minutes to spare. The trade-off is complexity – the Corona size gives you more time to explore the nuances.

Q: Are these beginner-friendly?

A: Absolutely. In fact, I’d argue they’re one of the best introduction cigars to the Cuban experience. They’re forgiving, approachable, and showcase what Cuban tobacco can do without overwhelming newer smokers.

Q: How can I tell if I’ve got a fake?

A: Buy from reputable sources, obviously. But beyond that, pay attention to the construction quality, the band details, and the box codes. Fakes are getting better, but they usually fall short on the subtleties – poor cap construction, uneven wrapper seams, bands that feel cheap.

Q: What’s a fair price?

A: This varies wildly depending on where you are and current market conditions. I’ve seen singles go for anywhere from $15 to $35. Box prices… well, that’s a moving target these days. Just remember – if it seems too good to be true, it probably is.

Q: How long do these take to smoke?

A: Plan on 75-90 minutes if you’re smoking at a reasonable pace. These aren’t cigars to rush. Take your time, pay attention, and enjoy the journey.

Final Thoughts

Look, I’ve smoked a lot of cigars over the past twenty-plus years. Some have been transcendent experiences, others have been expensive disappointments. Romeo y Julieta Coronas fall firmly into the first category.

They’re not the most powerful cigars you’ll ever smoke. They’re not the most complex. But they might just be the most consistently excellent. In a world where even premium cigars can be hit-or-miss, that consistency is worth its weight in gold.

If you’re new to Cuban cigars, start here. If you’re a seasoned veteran, come back to these when you want to remember why you fell in love with this hobby in the first place. And if you’re looking for a cigar that represents the best of what Cuba has to offer without breaking the bank or overwhelming your palate – well, you’ve found it.

Just do me a favor – when you light one up, take a moment to appreciate what you’re experiencing. These are handmade works of art, crafted by people who’ve been perfecting their techniques for generations. That deserves respect. And probably a good glass of rum.

The Romeo y Julieta Romeo y Julieta Coronas is a quality corona. Nice balance of flavor and strength. I enjoyed the caramel and toast notes throughout. Construction was very good with only one minor touch-up needed. Good cigar for experienced smokers.
