Romeo y Julieta Cedro De Luxe No.3 Review: A Cedar-Wrapped Journey Through Time

There’s something almost ritualistic about peeling away that thin cedar sleeve from a Romeo y Julieta Cedro De Luxe No.3. I’ve been doing this dance for over two decades now, and I swear the anticipation never gets old. The way that delicate wood veneer crackles slightly as you remove it… man, it’s like unwrapping a present from Havana itself. And let me tell you, el cedro cigars have this unique charm that regular wrapper cigars just can’t match – there’s an extra layer of mystique, literally and figuratively.

I remember the first time I encountered one of these beauties back in ’04. My buddy Carlos (old-school Cuban émigré who knew his tobacco) handed me one at his daughter’s wedding reception. “You think you know Romeo y Julieta?” he said with that knowing smirk. “Try this one, amigo.” The cedar wrapper was something I’d heard about but never experienced. Honestly? I was skeptical. Seemed gimmicky.

Boy, was I wrong.

First Impressions: The Cedar Makes All the Difference

Right off the bat, you notice the cedar’s influence even before lighting. The pre-light aroma is… how do I put this? It’s like walking into a well-aged humidor crossed with a carpenter’s workshop (but in the best possible way). That woody sweetness mingles with the classic Romeo y Julieta tobacco scents – you get hints of hay, maybe some light spice, definitely some cream.

The construction on these No.3s is typically solid. I’ve probably smoked close to fifty of these over the years, and I can count on one hand the ones that gave me draw issues. The cedar sleeve fits snugly but not tight – you can tell they’ve got this process down to a science. Though I will say this: store these properly or you’ll regret it. More on that later.

Size-wise, we’re talking about a Corona format – 5½ inches by 42 ring gauge. Perfect for when you want something substantial but don’t have three hours to kill. I’d say it’s about a 90-minute smoke if you’re not rushing it (and trust me, don’t rush it).

The Flavor Journey: Where the Magic Happens

Now here’s where things get interesting. See, most reviewers will break this down into neat little thirds, but that’s not how I smoke, and it’s probably not how you smoke either. Flavors evolve gradually, they ebb and flow, they surprise you.

Those first few puffs? Pure cedar influence. It’s woody without being overpowering, almost like the cigar is introducing itself politely. “Hello, I’m different.” Within the first inch, you start getting the classic Romeo y Julieta profile emerging – that smooth, creamy character they’re famous for. But here’s the thing: the cedar doesn’t just disappear. It stays in the background, adding this complexity that regular RyJ sticks just don’t have.

About halfway through, things shift. The cream gives way to more robust flavors – leather, maybe some coffee, definitely some earth. I’ve noticed (and this might just be me) that the cedar seems to mellow out the sharper edges that sometimes pop up in regular Romeo y Juliettas. It’s like having a good mediator in the room, keeping everyone playing nice.

The final third is where these cigars either win you over completely or leave you wondering what the fuss was about. Personally? I love this phase. The flavors concentrate, you get more spice, and that cedar influence comes back stronger. It’s like the wood is having the last word.

One thing I’ll warn you about: don’t expect a flavor bomb. This isn’t a Partagás or a Bolívar that’s going to knock you sideways. El cedro cigars, especially from the RyJ line, are about subtlety and balance. If you’re someone who needs bold, in-your-face flavors to stay interested, these might not be your cup of tea.

Perfect Pairings: What I Actually Drink With These

Forget the generic “pairs well with whiskey” nonsense you read everywhere. Let me tell you what I’ve actually tried and what works.

My go-to pairing? A proper Cuban coffee. Not that Starbucks stuff – I’m talking about a real cortadito or café cubano. The sweetness and intensity of the coffee plays beautifully with the cedar’s woody sweetness. I discovered this combination during a trip to Key West in ’08, and it’s been my preferred afternoon setup ever since.

For spirits, I’ve had great luck with Flor de Caña 18. The Nicaraguan rum’s vanilla and oak notes complement the cedar without competing with it. Whiskey-wise, I lean toward something not too peaty – maybe a Glenlivet 15 or, if you want to stay in the Latin theme, a good añejo tequila like Herradura Selección Suprema.

Wine pairing is tricky with these. I’ve tried everything from Bordeaux to Barolo, but honestly? The cedar throws off most wine pairings. If you must go wine, try a well-aged Rioja. Something about Spanish wine with Cuban tobacco just works.

Here’s a controversial take: beer can work beautifully with these cigars. A good Belgian dubbel or even a quality porter. I know, I know – some of you are rolling your eyes. But try it before you judge.

Who Should Smoke These (And Who Shouldn’t)

Let’s be honest here. These aren’t for everyone, and that’s okay.

You should try these if:

    • You’re already familiar with Romeo y Julieta’s regular lineup and want something different
    • You appreciate subtle complexity over bold flavors
    • You like the idea of cedar aging but want to taste it, not just imagine it
    • You’re looking for a good “special occasion” cigar that won’t break the bank

Skip these if:

    • You’re new to cigars – start with something simpler
    • You prefer full-bodied, high-nicotine cigars
    • You think the cedar wrapper is just a marketing gimmick (it kind of is, but it’s a good one)
    • You’re impatient – these need time to develop

I’ve shared these with probably two dozen different people over the years. The responses fall into two camps: “This is amazing, where can I get more?” or “It’s nice, but I don’t see what the big deal is.” Very rarely do people hate them, but they don’t convert everyone either.

Storage and Insider Tips

Here’s something most reviews won’t tell you: el cedro cigars are finicky about storage. More finicky than regular cigars. That cedar sleeve isn’t just for show – it’s actually doing something. It’s creating a micro-environment around the cigar, and if your humidor conditions aren’t stable, you’ll notice it faster with these than with regular sticks.

Keep them at 65-68% humidity. Any higher and the cedar gets soggy and starts affecting the draw. Any lower and it becomes brittle and starts cracking. I learned this the hard way when I moved to Arizona and my humidor setup went haywire for a few weeks. Lost four cedros because the sleeves split and the cigars dried out faster than normal.

Another tip: don’t remove the cedar sleeve until you’re ready to smoke. I know it’s tempting to peek, but that sleeve is protecting the wrapper underneath. I’ve seen people remove all their cedar sleeves for “better aging” – don’t do this. You’re missing the point.

Age-wise, these are good right off the truck, but they really shine with 2-3 years on them. I’ve got a few from 2019 that are absolutely singing right now. The cedar influence mellows slightly with age, and the tobacco underneath becomes more refined.

The Controversy: Are Cedar Wrappers Worth It?

Okay, here’s where I might ruffle some feathers. A lot of serious collectors think cedar-wrapped cigars are gimmicky. “Real cigars don’t need costumes,” one old-timer told me at a shop in Tampa. And I get it – there’s something to be said for tobacco speaking for itself.

But here’s my take after twenty-plus years: if it tastes good, it is good. Period. The cedar wrapper on these Romeo y Juliettas isn’t just decoration – it’s actually influencing the flavor in positive ways. Is it necessary? No. Does it make the cigar better? In this case, yes.

Are you paying a premium for the cedar? Absolutely. These typically run $8-12 more than a regular RyJ Corona. Is it worth it? Depends on what you value. If you’re buying cigars purely based on value-per-puff, probably not. If you’re buying them for the experience, definitely.

Frequently Asked Questions

Q: Do you remove the cedar before smoking?

A: Yes, always. The cedar sleeve comes off before you cut and light. Some people save the sleeves for kindling or humidor seasoning, but honestly, they’re too thin to be very useful.

Q: How do these compare to regular Romeo y Juliettas?

A: Think of them as RyJ Plus. Same basic DNA but with added complexity and smoothness. If you love regular Romeo y Juliettas, you’ll probably love these. If you find regular RyJs boring, these might change your mind.

Q: Can you age these long-term?

A: Definitely, but watch your storage conditions closely. I’ve smoked some with 5+ years on them, and they were fantastic. The cedar influence becomes more integrated over time.

Q: Are there other good cedar-wrapped options?

A: Sure. Davidoff makes some, and I’ve seen a few other brands experiment with cedar aging. But honestly? Romeo y Julieta perfected this concept. The others feel like they’re chasing something RyJ already nailed.

Bottom line: the Romeo y Julieta Cedro De Luxe No.3 isn’t revolutionary, but it’s really, really good at what it does. It takes an already solid cigar profile and adds just enough complexity to make it special. At around 90 minutes of smoking time, it’s long enough to be satisfying but short enough for a weeknight treat.

Would I buy a box? I have bought a box. Several, actually. Would I recommend them to a friend? Depends on the friend, but probably yes. Are they going to change your life? No. Are they going to give you a damn good smoke while you’re contemplating life? Absolutely.
