I’ve smoked enough Romeo y Julieta Cedro Deluxe 2 cigars to know they can be moody little bastards. But when they’re on? The construction on these has been pretty consistent over the years – better than it was in the early 2000s, that’s for sure. Remember when you’d get RyJ’s that looked like they were rolled by someone having a seizure? Those days are mostly behind us (thankfully). The Cedro Deluxe 2 typically comes with a nice, even colorado wrapper that’s got just enough tooth to let you know it means business.
I always take my time with the pre-light ritual on these. That cedar sleeve isn’t just for show – it actually does something to the tobacco during aging. I’ve done side-by-side comparisons with regular RyJ Churchill’s, and there’s definitely a subtle difference. The cedar seems to mellow out some of the sharper edges while adding this almost vanilla-like sweetness that you’ll pick up right from the cold draw.
Speaking of the cold draw – if you’re getting sawdust and nothing else, put it back and grab another one. Life’s too short, and these aren’t cheap enough to waste time on a dud.
The Flavor Journey: Not Your Typical Third-by-Third Breakdown
Look, I could sit here and tell you about the “first third delivering notes of cedar and cream, transitioning to leather and spice in the middle, with a finale of coffee and dark chocolate.” But honestly? That’s not how I experience cigars, and it’s probably not how you do either.
What I will tell you is this: the Romeo y Julieta Cedro Deluxe 2 starts gentle and stays that way for longer than you’d expect. It’s not one of those cigars that sucker-punches you with nicotine (I’m looking at you, Partagas Serie D No. 4). Instead, it builds slowly, like a good conversation that gets more interesting as the evening wears on.
The cedar influence is real and persistent – not overwhelming, but it’s always there in the background. Think of it as the bass line in a good jazz quartet. You might not always notice it consciously, but take it away and something important is missing.
About an inch in, you’ll start getting what I can only describe as this creamy, almost buttery quality. I smoked one of these last month with my buddy Carlos (great guy, terrible taste in baseball teams), and he said it reminded him of his grandmother’s pound cake. There’s this wonderful interplay between the now-prominent cedar, some coffee notes, and what I swear is a hint of dark honey.
What I’m Drinking: Pairings That Actually Work
I’ve paired these with everything from Cuban coffee to 25-year-old rum, and here’s what I’ve learned: don’t overthink it.
My go-to pairing is actually a good bourbon. Specifically, I love these with Buffalo Trace or Eagle Rare if I’m feeling fancy. The vanilla and caramel notes in the bourbon play beautifully with the cedar and cream from the cigar. I discovered this combination completely by accident during a bachelor party in Nashville (long story involving a delayed flight and a hotel bar), and it’s been my standard ever since.

Who Should Smoke This (And Who Shouldn’t)
The Romeo y Julieta Cedro Deluxe 2 is perfect for that guy who’s smoked enough cigars to appreciate subtlety but isn’t looking to have his head blown off by nicotine. If you’re the type who only smokes Ligas and Padrons because you need maximum flavor impact, this probably isn’t your stick.
It’s an excellent choice for newer Cuban cigar smokers. The cedar sleeve helps with aging (more on that later), so you’re less likely to get a harsh, young cigar. The flavor profile is approachable but complex enough to keep experienced smokers interested.
I wouldn’t recommend this to someone looking for a quick smoke. These take time – figure on at least an hour and twenty minutes if you’re doing it right. If you’re the type who rushes through cigars, you’ll miss most of what makes this one special.
Also, if you’re expecting every single one to be perfect, you might want to look elsewhere. Cuban quality control has improved dramatically, but it’s still Cuban quality control. I’d say about 85% of the ones I smoke are exactly what I’m hoping for, which is pretty damn good by Cuban standards.
Storage Tips and Insider Knowledge
Here’s something most people don’t know: those cedar sleeves actually make these cigars a bit more forgiving when it comes to humidity fluctuations. The wood acts as a buffer, so minor swings in your humidor won’t affect them as quickly as naked cigars.
That said, don’t use this as an excuse to be sloppy with your storage. I keep mine at 65% humidity, maybe 66% in the winter when the air gets really dry. Any higher and you risk the cedar developing mold issues, which is not a fun discovery to make.
Age-wise, these are usually good to smoke pretty much right away, but they do improve with time. I’ve got a box from 2019 that’s absolutely singing right now. The harsh edges have completely smoothed out, and the flavors have integrated beautifully. If you’ve got the patience, buy a box and forget about it for a couple years.
One thing that drives me crazy: people who remove the cedar sleeve immediately and throw it away. Don’t do this! The sleeve is part of the aging process. If you want to store them without the sleeves, fine, but at least smoke a few with the sleeves on to compare.
The Reality Check
Let’s talk about price for a minute. These aren’t cheap, and depending on where you’re getting them from (wink, wink), they might be really not cheap. Are they worth it? That depends on what you’re comparing them to.
Against other premium Cuban cigars? Absolutely. The Romeo y Julieta Cedro Deluxe 2 offers excellent value in the Cuban market. You’re getting a well-made cigar with consistent flavor and construction at a price point that won’t require you to take out a second mortgage.
Against non-Cuban premiums? That’s where it gets tricky. You can get some absolutely fantastic Nicaraguan or Dominican cigars for less money. But if you want that specifically Cuban character – that earthy, complex flavor profile that only comes from Vuelta Abajo tobacco – then you’re going to pay Cuban prices.

How do these compare to regular Romeo y Julieta Churchills?
The cedar sleeve makes a real difference. The regular Churchills can be a bit more aggressive, especially when they’re young. The Cedro Deluxe 2 is more refined, more balanced. Think of it as the Churchill’s more sophisticated older brother.
Should I age these, or smoke them fresh?
Both, honestly. Buy two boxes if you can afford it. Smoke one now, age the other. Fresh ones show you the vibrant, primary flavors. Aged ones reveal the complexity and integration that only comes with time. It’s like comparing a good Beaujolais to a aged Burgundy – both have their place.
What’s the deal with the cedar sleeve? Can I reuse it?
The sleeve is specifically designed for that cigar and has absorbed oils and flavors from the tobacco over time. You could theoretically reuse it, but why would you? It’s not going to provide the same benefit to a different cigar, and you’ll lose some of the character that makes the original special.

Is it perfect? No. Will every single one knock your socks off? Probably not. But if you’re looking for a solid, well-made Cuban cigar that delivers a classic flavor profile without breaking the bank (relatively speaking), this should definitely be on your list.
Just do me a favor – when you light one up, take your time with it. These cigars reward patience and attention. Rush through one while checking your phone or talking business, and you’ll miss most of what makes it special. Trust me on this one.

This is hands down one of the best cigars I’ve smoked this year. The Romeo y Julieta Romeo y Julieta Cedro De Luxe No. 2 exceeded all expectations. Rich, creamy smoke with complex notes of floral and cedar. Construction is perfect, ash holds firm. Worth every penny!
