Tasting Notes

Rich, complex Cuban flavors with notes of earth, cedar, leather, and spice.

Romeo y Julieta Capuletos EL 2016: When RyJ Actually Gets It Right

I’m sitting here on my back porch with about two inches of ash hanging off this Capuletos, and honestly? I’m kinda shocked. Not because the ash is holding (though that’s always satisfying), but because Romeo y Julieta actually managed to produce something that doesn’t make me want to reach for my Partagás instead.

Look, I’ll be straight with you – I’ve had a love-hate relationship with RyJ for the better part of fifteen years. Too many Churchill de Luxe disappointments. Too many Short Churchills that smoked like wet cardboard. But this Capuletos EL from 2016? It’s making me reconsider some things.

First Light and Early Impressions

The construction caught my eye immediately when I pulled this from my humidor last week. Been aging these babies for about six years now (patience, grasshopper), and the wrapper’s developed this gorgeous coffee-brown patina with just enough oil to catch the light. Not too veiny, which is something I can’t say for a lot of RyJ sticks I’ve encountered.

Pre-light draw was promising – maybe 6.5/10 resistance, which is right in my wheelhouse. I hate a loose draw almost as much as I hate having to work like I’m inflating a bicycle tire. Got some barnyard funk on the cold draw, bit of leather, touch of dried fruit. Standard Cuban fare, but cleaner than I expected.

First few puffs after toasting (and yes, I’m one of those guys who takes forever lighting – deal with it) delivered exactly what I hoped for. Clean tobacco flavors, none of that harsh ammonia bite that tells you the cigar needed another year in the box. The burn line started razor straight and stayed that way for the first inch, which immediately put this ahead of probably 40% of the Cubans I’ve smoked this year.

The Flavor Journey (Or: Why This Isn’t Your Typical RyJ)

Here’s where things get interesting, and where this Capuletos starts separating itself from the crowd. Most Romeo y Julietas – especially the regular production stuff – follow a pretty predictable script. Mild start, maybe some cedar, bit of cream, occasionally some spice if you’re lucky. Boring, honestly.

This EL breaks that mold completely.

The first third hit me with this beautiful combination of toasted bread and dark chocolate. Not milk chocolate – I’m talking about the good stuff, maybe 70% cacao. There’s this underlying earthiness that reminds me of walking through a forest after it rains (stay with me here). And then, just when I’m getting comfortable, it throws in some white pepper that made me sit up and pay attention.

Around the midpoint – and this is where I had to put my phone down and just focus – the profile shifted into something I wasn’t expecting. Coffee showed up. Not the burnt Starbucks kind, but more like a really good medium roast from that little place in downtown Portland I used to hit when I traveled there for work. Rich, smooth, with just enough acidity to keep things interesting.

The final third? Game changer. Most cigars either fade out or get too strong and tar-like. This Capuletos found this sweet spot where the chocolate from earlier came back, but deeper somehow. More complex. And the spice evolved too – less sharp pepper, more like a good paprika with some heat behind it.

Burn time was right at two hours, which for a robusto extra (that’s what this vitola is, essentially) puts it in excellent territory.

What I’m Drinking With This

Okay, controversial opinion time: I think most cigar and spirits pairings people recommend are complete nonsense. Half these guys are just trying to sound sophisticated by matching a $20 cigar with a $150 bottle of rum.

That said, I’ve smoked three of these Capuletos now with different drinks, and I’ve got some actual recommendations based on what worked.

First one I paired with a Glenfiddich 18. Solid choice – the chocolate notes in the cigar played really well with the apple and spice in the scotch. Second time I went with coffee (morning smoke on a Saturday – don’t judge), specifically some medium roast Colombian. The coffee amplified those roasted flavors in the cigar without competing.

But the winner? A glass of Appleton Estate 12 year rum, neat with just a splash of water. The rum’s honeyed sweetness balanced out the earthier elements, and both the cigar and rum have this underlying richness that just worked. Plus, at around $35 for a bottle, it’s not going to break the bank like some of these other “premium” pairings people push.

Beer guys – try this with a good porter. I had one with a Founders Porter last month and it was fantastic. The roasted malt flavors were a perfect match.

Storage Notes and Insider Stuff

If you’re thinking about picking up a box of these (and honestly, you should if you can find them), here’s what I’ve learned from storing mine:

Keep them at 65% humidity, not higher. I made the mistake of storing my first few at 69% and they smoked wet and flavorless. These seem to prefer being on the drier side – probably something to do with the blend or how they were rolled.

Age matters more with these than with most ELs I’ve tried. The ones I smoked fresh (2017-2018) were good but not great. Now, with six years on them? They’re completely different cigars. More refined, better balance, all those harsh edges smoothed out.

One weird thing – and I haven’t figured out why this is – but every box I’ve seen has had one or two cigars with slightly soft spots near the foot. Not enough to affect the smoke, but worth checking before you light up. Might be a rolling issue specific to this release.

Who Should Smoke This (And Who Shouldn’t)

If you’re new to Cuban cigars, start somewhere else. This isn’t beginner-friendly, not because it’s too strong (it’s actually pretty medium-bodied), but because you won’t appreciate what makes it special. Cut your teeth on some Montecristo No. 4s or maybe a romeo y julieta devocion (which is actually a solid introduction to the marca, despite what the Cuban purists say about non-Cuban RyJs).

This is for the guy who’s smoked enough cigars to know what he likes and what he doesn’t. Someone who can appreciate subtlety and complexity over raw strength. If your favorite cigar is a Liga Privada No. 9, you might find this boring.

Perfect for experienced smokers who want something sophisticated without being pretentious. It’s complex enough to keep you interested but not so weird that you’ll spend the whole time trying to figure out what you’re tasting.

And honestly? This might be the cigar to convert some Romeo y Julieta skeptics. I know I was one of them.

The Bottom Line

At current market prices (I’m seeing boxes for $400-500 when you can find them), these aren’t cheap. But for an Edición Limitada with this much age on it, they’re actually reasonable. Compare that to what Cohiba ELs are going for and it starts to look like a bargain.

The Capuletos EL 2016 represents everything Romeo y Julieta should be doing more of. It takes the traditional marca character – that smooth, approachable Cuban profile – and adds layers of complexity that most regular production RyJs just don’t have.

My only real complaint? They didn’t make enough of them. This was a limited release for a reason, and finding boxes now is getting harder every year.

Reader Questions I Always Get

How do these compare to other Romeo y Julieta releases?

Night and day difference. Most regular production RyJs are pleasant but forgettable. These have character and complexity that’ll stick with you. Better construction, better flavor, better everything really.

Are they worth the premium over regular Romeo y Julietas?

If you can afford it, absolutely. But if budget’s tight, try a romeo y julieta devocion first to see if you like the general profile before dropping serious money on these.

How much aging do they need?

Minimum three years from purchase date. Five to six years is the sweet spot based on what I’ve experienced. They’ll probably continue improving for another few years beyond that.

Any other ELs from 2016 worth trying?

The Partagás Serie E No. 2 EL 2016 was solid, and the H. Upmann Propios was interesting but inconsistent. But honestly, this Capuletos might have been the best EL release that year.

Look, I’m not saying this is the greatest Cuban cigar ever made. It’s not. But it’s really, really good, and it’s shown me that Romeo y Julieta still knows how to make exceptional cigars when they put their mind to it. Sometimes that’s enough to restore your faith in a marca.

Just wish they’d do it more often.
