Tasting Notes

Rich, complex Cuban flavors with notes of earth, cedar, leather, and spice.

The Romeo y Julieta Exhibicion No. 4 Will Change Your Mind About Cuban Value Smokes

I’ll come right out and say it: the Romeo y Julieta Exhibicion No. 4 is probably the most underrated Cuban cigar you’ve never heard of. And that’s exactly why I love it.

Been smoking Cubans since ’98 (yeah, I’m that old), and I’ve watched countless smokers chase after the big names – your Cohibas, your Montecristo No. 2s, your Padróns. Meanwhile, they’re walking right past gems like this Exhibicion No. 4, probably because it doesn’t have the marketing muscle behind it. Their loss, honestly.

First time I encountered this particular vitola was about six years ago at a little shop in Zurich. The owner – this gruff Swiss guy who’d been in the business longer than I’d been alive – pulled it out when I asked for something “different but reliable.” Smart bastard knew exactly what he was doing.

What You’re Actually Getting

The Exhibicion No. 4 sits in that sweet spot size-wise. It’s a robusto, but not quite – think of it as Romeo’s take on what a working man’s cigar should be. About 5 inches, ring gauge in the mid-40s. Perfect for when you’ve got an hour and change but don’t want to commit to one of those massive churchills that’ll have you puffing away for three hours.

Construction-wise? Look, Cuban quality control isn’t what it was in the ’90s (controversial opinion, but fight me), but these Exhibicion No. 4s have been surprisingly consistent in my experience. I’ve probably gone through four or five boxes over the years, and I can count the duds on one hand. That’s saying something for modern Cuban production.

The wrapper’s got that classic Cuban look – not too oily, not too dry. Sometimes you’ll get one with a few small veins, but nothing that screams “amateur hour.” The cap’s well-constructed, cuts clean with a decent guillotine. (I use an old Xikar that’s been with me since 2003 – if it ain’t broke, don’t fix it.)

The Smoke Itself – And Why I Keep Coming Back

Here’s where things get interesting with the romeo y julieta exhibicion no 4. First third? It’s all about that classic Cuban hay and barnyard funk, but in the best possible way. Not overpowering like some of the stronger marcas, but definitely present. There’s this underlying sweetness too – almost like honey drizzled over toast. Sounds fancy, but that’s genuinely what I taste.

The burn’s usually pretty even (again, surprising for modern Cuban production). Ash holds for about an inch before dropping, sometimes longer if you’re careful. Draw’s typically just right – not too loose like some of the budget Cubans, not plugged like… well, let’s not name names.

Middle section is where this cigar really shines, in my opinion. The sweetness from the first third starts playing with these earthy, almost leathery notes. Not harsh leather – more like a well-worn baseball glove. And there’s this subtle spice that creeps in. Nothing that’ll knock your socks off, but enough to keep things interesting.

I smoked one of these last month with my buddy Carlos (he’s the one who got me into Cubans in the first place), and he made this observation that stuck with me: “It’s like Romeo y Julieta took everything good about their blend and just… calmed it down a notch.” Guy’s got a point. It’s got that classic R&J DNA but without any of the harshness you sometimes get with their stronger offerings.

Final third? This is where some people lose interest, but I think they’re missing the point. Yeah, it gets a bit more mellow, but there’s this creamy, almost coffee-like thing happening. Not espresso – more like a really good café con leche. Sometimes I pick up hints of cedar too, probably from the aging process.

What I Pair It With (And What You Shouldn’t)

Drink pairing’s where I get a bit nerdy, so bear with me. This cigar plays beautifully with rum – specifically something like a Diplomatico Reserva Exclusiva or, if you’re feeling fancy, a Ron Zacapa 23. The sweetness in both just works together without competing.

Coffee? Absolutely, but not your typical espresso. I’ve had great luck with Colombian medium roasts, something with chocolate notes. There’s a local roaster here that does this Colombian Huila that’s just perfect with the Exhibicion No. 4. (Won’t name the roaster because this isn’t an ad, but if you’re ever in Denver…)

Whiskey’s trickier. Bourbon’s too sweet, scotch is too… Scottish. But a good Irish whiskey? Redbreast 12, maybe some Green Spot? Now we’re talking. The smoothness complements rather than fights.

What doesn’t work: beer. I know, I know, some people swear by beer and cigars, but with this particular stick, beer just muddies everything up. Trust me, I’ve tried. Also, avoid anything too strong drink-wise – you’ll overpower the cigar’s more subtle characteristics.

Who Should Buy This (And Who Should Look Elsewhere)

If you’re new to Cubans, this is actually a fantastic starter cigar. It’s got enough character to show you what Cuban tobacco’s all about, but it won’t beat you over the head with strength or complexity. Plus, the price point won’t make you cry if you don’t love it.

Experienced smokers looking for something different? Yeah, definitely worth a try. Especially if you’re tired of the same old rotation of Cohibas and Montecristos. This isn’t going to be your new desert island cigar, but it might become a reliable go-to.

Who should skip it? If you’re only into full-strength powerhouses, this probably isn’t for you. It’s medium at best, and if you need that nicotine kick, look elsewhere. Also, if you’re the type who only smokes cigars for special occasions… I mean, you could, but there are probably better choices for truly special moments.

Storage and Practical Stuff

These age pretty well, actually. I’ve got a few from 2019 that are smoking better now than they did fresh. The sweetness mellows out a bit, the earthy notes become more prominent. Nothing dramatic, but noticeable if you’re paying attention.

Storage-wise, treat ’em like any other Cuban. 65-68% humidity, steady temperature. I keep mine in a separate section of my humidor (old habit from the days when I was paranoid about beetle larvae), but that’s probably overkill.

One quirk I’ve noticed: these seem particularly sensitive to humidity fluctuations. More so than other Cubans I’ve stored. Had a batch go wonky on me a few years back when my humidor controller went haywire. The wrappers started cracking, burn got uneven. So if your storage isn’t dialed in perfectly, maybe smoke these sooner rather than later.

The Bottom Line on Romeo y Julieta Exhibicion No. 4

Look, I’m not going to tell you this is the greatest Cuban cigar ever made. It’s not. But it’s honest, it’s reliable, and it’s got enough character to keep you interested without demanding your full attention. Sometimes that’s exactly what you want.

I keep a handful of these on rotation specifically for those times when I want a good Cuban but don’t want to think too hard about it. Reading a book, watching a game, just sitting on the porch thinking about life – that’s when the Exhibicion No. 4 shines.

Price-wise, they’re typically reasonable for Cubans. Not cheap exactly, but you’re not paying the Cohiba premium either. Good value for what you get, which is more than I can say for a lot of Cuban cigars these days.

Frequently Asked Questions

How does this compare to other Romeo y Julieta vitolas?

It’s milder than the Churchill, more complex than the Petit Corona. Think of it as the middle child of the R&J family – reliable but sometimes overlooked.

Can I age these long-term?

Sure, but I wouldn’t go crazy. Five years max before they start losing some of their character. These aren’t Cohiba Esplendidos – they’re meant to be enjoyed relatively fresh.

Are they available year-round?

In my experience, yes, but availability varies by region. They’re not limited releases, but they’re not exactly flying off the shelves either. Your local Cuban dealer should be able to get them without too much trouble.

What’s the best time of day for these?

I’m partial to late afternoon, maybe early evening. After work but before dinner. They’re substantial enough to be satisfying but won’t kill your appetite or keep you up at night.

Bottom line? If you see romeo y julieta exhibicion no 4 boxes at your local shop, grab one. You might not fall in love immediately, but I’m betting they’ll grow on you. Sometimes the best cigars are the ones that don’t try too hard to impress.
