Tasting Notes

Rich, complex Cuban flavors with notes of earth, cedar, leather, and spice.

Romeo y Julieta ESCUDOS Edición Limitada 2007: A Cuban Heavyweight That Nearly Broke My Humidor

Picture this: Miami, February 2008, sitting on my buddy Carlos’s balcony overlooking Biscayne Bay. He’d just gotten back from one of his “business trips” to London (wink wink) and pulls out this monster of a cigar I’d never seen before. “Try this,” he says, handing me what looked like a small baseball bat with a Romeo y Julieta band. That was my introduction to the ESCUDOS Edición Limitada 2007, and honestly? I wasn’t prepared for what I was about to experience.

The thing about these ESCUDOS – and this might sound dramatic but hear me out – is that they’re not really cigars in the traditional sense. They’re more like… smoking events. At 7 inches long with a 54 ring gauge, these beauties demand respect, time, and frankly, a decent romeo y julieta humidor limited edition setup to store them properly (more on that headache later).

First Impressions: Size Matters (Sometimes)

Let me get this out of the way first: if you’re looking for a quick smoke, walk away. Just… don’t. These aren’t your everyday Romeo y Julieta Churchill or even the excellent Wide Churchills that I’ve been puffing on since the Clinton administration. The ESCUDOS is a commitment – we’re talking 2.5 to 3 hours of your life, minimum.

When I first handled one (that night in Miami), the construction was immediately apparent. Perfect. Not good, not great – perfect. The wrapper had this gorgeous Colorado shade with just enough oils to catch the setting sun. The pre-light draw gave me hints of what was coming: cedar, maybe some leather, and this underlying sweetness that reminded me of my grandmother’s molasses cookies.

But here’s where it gets interesting – and where some people are gonna disagree with me. The foot of this cigar smelled different than any Romeo I’d encountered before. More earthy, almost mineral-like. Some guys I’ve smoked with over the years describe it as “Cuban soil,” but that’s a bit too poetic for my taste. To me, it just smelled… serious.

The Smoking Experience: A Journey Worth Taking

Now, I’ve got to tell you about the light-up because it’s crucial with these big boys. You can’t rush it. I learned this the hard way when I torched through the first one Carlos gave me (yeah, he wasn’t happy about that waste). Use a soft flame, take your time, and for the love of all that’s holy, make sure you’ve got at least three hours cleared in your schedule.

The first third – and I hate dividing cigars into thirds because that’s not how I smoke, but it’s useful here – opened with this incredible cedar note. Not just any cedar, but that specific Cuban cedar you get from well-aged tobacco. There was black pepper too, but refined. Sophisticated. Like the difference between cracking fresh peppercorns and using that pre-ground dust from the grocery store.

About forty-five minutes in (I was timing it because Carlos insisted), something magical happened. The flavor profile just… expanded. Leather crept in, then this gorgeous coffee note – not espresso, more like a really good medium roast. Ethiopian, maybe. The pepper backed off just enough to let these deeper flavors breathe.

Here’s where I’m gonna say something controversial: I think the middle portion of this cigar is better than most entire cigars I’ve smoked. And I’ve smoked a lot of cigars. We’re talking Cohiba Behikes, aged Davidoffs, even some of those mythical pre-revolution Cubans my uncle somehow managed to squirrel away. The ESCUDOS, when it hits its stride, is just phenomenal.

The final third? That’s where things get complex. Some of these developed this amazing sweetness – honey, maybe some vanilla. Others (and this seems to depend on storage and age) went a bit bitter. Not unpleasantly so, but enough that you noticed. It kept me engaged though, which is saying something for a cigar this long.

Pairing: What Actually Works (And What Doesn’t)

Okay, so everyone’s gonna tell you to pair these with rum. Cuban rum, specifically. And yeah, that works. I’ve done it with Havana Club 15 and it’s lovely. But honestly? I think that’s boring advice.

My favorite pairing – and this took me years to figure out – is actually a good Islay Scotch. I know, I know, sounds weird. But hear me out. Something like Ardbeg 10 or Laphroaig Quarter Cask. The peat smoke doesn’t fight with the cigar’s earthy notes; it complements them. The maritime character of these whiskies somehow brings out that mineral quality I mentioned earlier.

For non-drinkers or afternoon smoking (though who smokes a three-hour cigar in the afternoon?), I’ve had great luck with Cuban coffee. Not that Miami café con leche stuff – I mean real Cuban coffee when you can get it. The bitterness and the cigar’s sweetness create this incredible balance.

Wine? Forget it. Tried it with a ’96 Barolo once (expensive mistake) and the wine just disappeared. Beer? Only if it’s something big – Imperial Stout territory. I had one with a Founders KBS once and it was pretty spectacular, but that’s not exactly an everyday pairing.

Storage Nightmares and Solutions

Let’s talk about the elephant in the room: storing these monsters. When I first started collecting them (and yes, I went a bit crazy and bought a box), I quickly realized my standard desktop humidor wasn’t gonna cut it. These things are just too big for most standard setups.

I ended up having to invest in a larger cabinet humidor – specifically one of those Romeo y Julieta limited edition humidors I found at an estate sale (lucky find, that). Even then, these ESCUDOS take up serious real estate. Each cigar is basically equivalent to storing two or three robusto-sized smokes in terms of space.

Temperature and humidity become even more critical with cigars this size. I learned (again, the hard way) that the standard 70/70 rule doesn’t quite work here. I keep mine at 65% humidity and around 68°F. Any higher and the large ring gauge seems to develop burn issues. Any lower and they dry out too quickly given their length.

One thing I’ve noticed over the years: these cigars are sensitive to temperature fluctuations. More so than smaller formats. I lost three of them to wrapper cracks during a particularly hot Miami summer when my air conditioning decided to give up the ghost. Expensive lesson.

Who Should Smoke These (And Who Shouldn’t)

This is where I’m gonna be brutally honest, and some people aren’t gonna like what I have to say. These cigars aren’t for beginners. They’re not even for most intermediate smokers. The nicotine content alone will knock you on your ass if you’re not prepared for it (trust me on this one).

If you’re someone who typically smokes mild-to-medium cigars, skip these. Seriously. Start with regular Romeo y Julieta Churchill or maybe work your way up through some of the other limited editions first. The ESCUDOS will be there when you’re ready.

On the flip side, if you’re an experienced smoker who appreciates complexity and has the time to really engage with what you’re smoking, these are incredible. They’re not cigars you smoke while doing other things. They demand attention. They reward patience.

I’d also say these are perfect for special occasions. I’ve got maybe six left from my original purchases, and I save them for really meaningful moments. Births, anniversaries, major life events. They’re too special (and too expensive) for everyday smoking.

The Verdict and Some Real Talk

Here’s my honest assessment after 15+ years and probably two dozen of these cigars: the Romeo y Julieta ESCUDOS Edición Limitada 2007 represents Cuban cigar making at its absolute peak. When they’re good, they’re transcendent. When they’re not… well, you’ve just wasted three hours and a significant amount of money.

The inconsistency is my biggest gripe. Out of the box I bought, maybe 60% were absolutely phenomenal. The rest ranged from good to disappointing. For the price point these command now (and they’ve only gotten more expensive as stocks dwindle), that variance is frustrating.

But when you get a good one – and I mean a really good one – it’s an experience you won’t forget. That night in Miami with Carlos? I still remember every note, every flavor transition. That’s the power of a truly great cigar.

Quick Answers to Common Questions

Are they worth the current market price? Depends on what they’re going for where you are, but honestly, probably not for most people. They were a better value in 2008-2010 when you could still find them at reasonable prices.

How do they compare to other Romeo y Julieta limited editions? In my opinion, they’re the best Romeo limited edition I’ve smoked. Better than the 2009 Remedios, better than the 2011 Petit Royales (though those are completely different cigars).

Can beginners smoke these? No. Just no. You’ll make yourself sick and waste a great cigar.

How long do they last in proper storage? I’ve got some from 2008 that are still smoking beautifully. These seem to age very well, actually getting more complex over time.

If you can find them at a reasonable price and you’ve got the experience to appreciate them, grab them. If not, there are plenty of other excellent Romeo y Julieta options that won’t require a second mortgage. Either way, you can’t go wrong with Romeo – they’ve been getting it right for longer than any of us have been alive.
