About This Cigar
The Ramón Allones Superiores is an exclusive Casa del Habano release, available only at LCDH shops worldwide. Limited to 5,000 boxes of 10, this corona gorda format delivers great complexity and strong flavor characteristic of the brand.
Tasting Notes
Complex and strong flavor with notes of leather, earth, dark chocolate, espresso, and herbal qualities. Earthy, mineral Cuban terroir with a sweet caramelized finish.
I’ll Be Honest – This Ramon Allones Superiores CDH Completely Changed My Mind About the Marca
Look, I wasn’t exactly jumping out of my chair when I first heard about the Ramon Allones Superiores Casa del Habano exclusive. Been smoking Cubans since ’98, and frankly? Ramon Allones has always been that marca I’d grab when my usual suspects weren’t available. Solid, sure. But never spectacular. Boy, was I wrong about this particular stick.
First time I laid hands on one of these was actually up in Montreal – grabbed a box from that legendary Casa del Habanos Montreal location on Sherbrooke Street. You know the one. If you’ve never been, it’s basically cigar heaven with that walk-in humidor that makes you want to max out your credit cards. The guy behind the counter (Pierre, I think his name was) recommended it with this knowing grin. “Trust me on this one,” he said in that perfect French-Canadian accent.
And damn if he wasn’t right.
What Makes This Stick Different
The Superiores Casa del Habano isn’t your typical Ramon Allones. It’s a limited production cigar that’s only available at Casa del Habanos shops worldwide, which explains why I’d never really given it proper attention before. Measuring in at about 5.5 inches with a 46 ring gauge, it’s got this perfect corona gorda proportions that just feels right in your hand.
The wrapper on mine had this gorgeous colorado maduro hue – not too dark, not too light. You could see the oils practically glistening under the shop lights. Construction felt solid without being overpacked (you Ramon Allones regulars know what I’m talking about – sometimes their regular production can be a bit inconsistent in that department).
Pre-light draw gave me hints of what was coming: leather, some barnyard funk (the good kind), and this underlying sweetness that reminded me of dried figs. The cold aroma off the foot was pure Cuban terroir – that earthy, almost mineral quality you get from Vuelta Abajo tobacco.
The Smoke Journey – Not Your Typical Thirds Breakdown
Here’s where I’m gonna break from the usual review format because this cigar doesn’t smoke in neat little thirds. It’s more like a slow-building symphony that keeps evolving.
First few puffs hit you with classic Ramon Allones DNA – that distinctive earthiness with some white pepper on the retrohale. But then something interesting happens around the half-inch mark. This creamy, almost buttery texture develops that I’ve honestly never experienced with regular RA sticks. It’s like they took the best parts of the marca’s profile and smoothed out all the rough edges.
The burn was absolutely pristine on both cigars I’ve smoked so far (yeah, I’m savoring this box slowly). Razor-sharp line, cool smoke, perfect draw. This is where you can really tell the difference between regular production and these special releases – the quality control is just on another level.
Around the midpoint, things get really interesting. You start picking up these notes of dark chocolate and espresso, but not in that heavy, overwhelming way. More like when you’re sipping a really good Cuban coffee and catch that subtle cocoa finish. There’s also this herbal quality that comes and goes – sometimes it reminds me of oregano, other times it’s more like dried tobacco leaves (which, yeah, I know how that sounds).
The final third is where this cigar really shows its pedigree. Instead of getting harsh or hot like some Cubans do when you push them, it just gets richer. More concentrated. By the time you’re down to the nub (and trust me, you’ll want to smoke it until your fingers get warm), you’re getting waves of leather, earth, and this amazing caramelized sugar sweetness.
Perfect Pairings I’ve Actually Tried
Forget the generic “pairs well with whiskey” nonsense. I’ve actually experimented with this cigar, and here’s what works:
Ron Zacapa 23: This Guatemalan rum is absolutely perfect with the Superiores CDH. The honeyed sweetness plays beautifully against the earthy tobacco, and both have enough complexity to keep you interested. Had this combo on my buddy Mike’s deck last summer – pure magic.
Café Bustelo espresso: Sounds weird, but hear me out. The bitter coffee notes complement rather than compete with the cigar’s chocolate undertones. Plus, there’s something authentically Cuban about this pairing that just feels right.
Highland Park 18: If you’re a scotch person (and can afford it), this Orkney single malt has just enough smoke and honey to dance with the cigar without overwhelming it. Shared one of these pairings with my father-in-law last Christmas – even converted him from his usual Macanudos.
What doesn’t work? Anything too aggressive. I tried it with Lagavulin 16 once and it was a disaster. Too much peat smoke competing with the tobacco.
Who Should Buy This (And Who Shouldn’t)
This isn’t a beginner’s cigar, despite what some might tell you. Yeah, it’s smoother than regular Ramon Allones, but it’s still got that full Cuban character that can overwhelm newer smokers. If you’re still working your way up from Connecticut wrappers, maybe hold off for now.
Perfect for:
- Experienced Cuban smokers looking for something familiar but elevated
- Ramon Allones fans who want to see what the marca can really do
- Collectors who appreciate limited Casa del Habanos releases
- Anyone who enjoys medium-full Cuban cigars with complexity
Skip it if:
- You’re new to cigars (start with something milder)
- You only smoke ultra-premium stuff (this isn’t Cohiba Behike territory, price-wise or strength-wise)
- You don’t like earthy, traditional Cuban flavors
Here’s maybe a controversial take: I actually prefer this to some of the regular production Partagas Serie D No. 4s I’ve had lately. Yeah, I said it. The quality control on this Casa del Habanos exclusive is just more consistent than what I’ve been getting from some of the regular marca releases.
Storage and Insider Tips
These seem to handle humidity fluctuations better than some Cubans I’ve stored. I keep mine at about 65% RH and 68°F, and they’ve been aging beautifully. The few I smoked fresh were excellent, but the ones I’ve let sit for six months have developed even more complexity.
One quirk I’ve noticed: let these warm up for at least 10-15 minutes before lighting if you’re taking them from a cool humidor to room temperature. Seems to help with the initial burn and flavor development.
If you can find a box (they’re not always in stock at Casa del Habanos locations), I’d honestly recommend grabbing it sooner rather than later. These limited releases have a habit of disappearing, and I’ve got a feeling this particular one is going to develop quite a following once more people discover it.
What About Availability?
Here’s the thing about Casa del Habanos exclusives – they’re not exactly sitting on every shelf. Your best bet is calling ahead to CDH locations or checking with reputable online retailers that specialize in Cuban cigars. That Casa del Habanos Montreal I mentioned earlier usually has good stock, but I’d recommend calling first if you’re making a special trip.
Pricing is reasonable for what you’re getting – definitely more than regular RA sticks, but not in the stratosphere like some limited releases. We’re talking maybe 30-40% premium over standard Ramon Allones, which honestly feels fair given the quality bump.
Final Thoughts and FAQs
How long should I age these? They’re great fresh, but I think they hit their sweet spot around 6-12 months of proper storage. Haven’t had any old enough to test longer aging, but the trajectory looks promising.
How do they compare to other RA vitolas? Night and day difference in consistency and refinement. Still recognizably Ramon Allones, but like the marca’s best possible version of itself.
Are they worth seeking out? Absolutely. Even if you’re not typically a Ramon Allones person, these might change your mind like they did mine.
Look, I’m not gonna tell you this is the greatest Cuban cigar ever made. It’s not. But it’s a damn fine smoke that showcases what can happen when a traditional marca gets the premium treatment. If you see them available and you’re looking for something in that medium-full Cuban wheelhouse, don’t hesitate.
Just make sure you’ve got a good rum and about 90 minutes to properly appreciate what you’re smoking. Trust me on this one.
