Look, I’ve been smoking Cuban cigars since Clinton was in office, and I’ll tell you straight up: the Partagas Serie D No. 4 Reserve L.E. 2005 is hands down one of the most underrated limited editions to come out of the Romeo y Julieta factory. Yeah, you heard that right – most people don’t even know these beauties weren’t rolled in the traditional Partagas factory.
I remember picking up my first box of these back in ’06 from a dealer in Switzerland (won’t name names, but if you know, you know). Paid through the nose for them too. My buddy Carlos thought I was crazy dropping that kind of cash on what he called “just another robusto.” Man, was he wrong.
First Impressions That’ll Make You Rethink Everything
Right out of the gate, this partagas serie d no 4 review needs to address the elephant in the room – these don’t smoke like regular Serie D No. 4’s. At all. The wrapper’s got this gorgeous colorado maduro shade that’s darker than your typical Partagas fare. It’s oily without being greasy, if that makes sense. The construction? Flawless. I mean, absolutely flawless in a way that makes you wonder why regular production cigars can’t hit this consistency.
The pre-light draw gives you hints of what’s coming – leather, dark chocolate, maybe some raisins lurking in there. But here’s the thing that got me: there’s this underlying mineral quality that I’ve only found in aged Cuban tobacco. And we’re talking about cigars that were already 18 years old when I last smoked one in 2023.
Cold draw resistance is perfect. Not too tight, not too loose. These roll masters knew what they were doing.
The Smoke – A Journey Worth Taking Slowly
Now, I’m not gonna give you some BS about “thirds” because that’s not how great cigars work. They evolve constantly, sometimes surprising you in the middle, sometimes front-loading all their best stuff. The Reserve L.E. does something different entirely.
First few puffs hit you with this creamy, almost buttery smoke that coats your palate. There’s immediate spice – not pepper, but more like cinnamon and nutmeg. The kind of warm spices your grandmother used in her holiday baking. Then, about an inch in, boom – here comes the classic Partagas earthiness, but it’s refined. Sophisticated. Like it went to finishing school.
What really sets this apart from a standard Serie D No. 4 review is the evolution. Around the halfway point, you start getting these waves of dried fruit flavors. Not the in-your-face sweetness some Cuban cigars throw at you, but subtle notes that make you pause and think “what was that?”

Let me be brutally honest here. If you’re new to Cuban cigars, this isn’t where you should start. The price point alone makes it a risky proposition for beginners, and honestly, you won’t appreciate the nuances that make this cigar special. Start with regular production Partagas and work your way up.
This is for the collector who appreciates limited editions. The guy (or gal) who’s got a proper humidor setup and isn’t afraid to let cigars age. These reward patience in ways that’ll surprise you.
It’s also perfect for special occasions. I’ve gifted these for promotions, anniversaries, the birth of kids. They make an impression, and rightfully so.
Who should skip them? Anyone looking for a quick smoke. These demand at least 90 minutes of your time, probably closer to two hours if you’re doing it right. Also, if you prefer lighter, Connecticut-wrapper style cigars, this’ll probably be too intense for your palate.
Storage Secrets and Insider Tips
Here’s something most people don’t know: these actually improve with age, but only if you store them properly. I keep mine at 65% humidity, slightly lower than my regular Cuban storage. The lower humidity helps concentrate the flavors without drying out the tobacco.
Temperature consistency is crucial. I learned this the hard way when my humidor went through some temperature swings during a particularly hot summer. The wrappers started showing stress cracks, and the flavor suffered.
If you’re buying a box (and you should, singles are nearly impossible to find), don’t smoke one right away. Let them rest in your humidor for at least a month. The shipping stress needs time to settle out.

The Reserve L.E. 2005 is different. The tobacco selection, the extra aging, the attention to detail – it all shows in the final product.
I’ve blind-tested these against regular Serie D No. 4’s with friends, and every single person could tell the difference. That’s rare in the limited edition world.
What People Always Ask Me
How do these compare to the regular Serie D No. 4? Night and day difference. The regular production is a great cigar, don’t get me wrong, but it’s like comparing a good bottle of wine to a great bottle of wine. Similar DNA, completely different experience.
Are they worth the premium price? If you’ve got the budget and appreciate the craftsmanship, absolutely. But I won’t lie to you – these aren’t cheap, and they’re getting more expensive as remaining stock dwindles.

Do I wish I’d bought more boxes back in the day? Absolutely. Will I pay current market prices for another box? Probably not – there are other great cigars that offer better value. But if you stumble across one at a reasonable price, grab it. You won’t regret it.

Excellent cigar from Partagas. The Partagas Series D No. 4 Reserve L. E. 2005 has a refined flavor profile – lots of dark chocolate and nuts. Draw was perfect and it burned for about 59 minutes. Only minor complaint is it’s slightly strong for my taste, but overall a great smoke.

Decent cigar but not my favorite from Partagas. The Partagas Series D No. 4 Reserve L. E. 2005 has good flavor – dark chocolate and nuts – but didn’t wow me like other Cubans I’ve had. Construction was fine, burn was mostly even. It’s good, just not exceptional. Worth trying though.
