A premium Cuban cigar from Partagás.

Tasting Notes

Rich, complex Cuban flavors with notes of earth, cedar, leather, and spice.

My Love-Hate Relationship with the Partagas Petit Corona

I’ll never forget the first time I lit up a Partagas Petit Corona. It was 2003, sitting on the balcony of a dingy hotel in Havana with my buddy Mike – guy who thinks he knows everything about cigars but couldn’t tell the difference between a Cohiba and a gas station stogie if his life depended on it. Anyway, we’d just picked up a box from the official shop (back when you could actually trust most of the official shops), and I was expecting… well, honestly I wasn’t sure what to expect.

See, I’d been smoking mostly Montecristo No. 2s and Romeo y Julieta Churchills at that point. Big cigars. Cigars that made a statement. This little petit corona cigar looked almost comical in comparison – like bringing a pocket knife to a sword fight. Boy, was I wrong about that.

Twenty years later, and I’ve probably gone through at least a dozen boxes of these little powerhouses. They’ve become my go-to when I want something serious but don’t have two hours to kill. And let me tell you something that might ruffle some feathers – I think the Partagas Petit Corona is criminally underrated compared to its bigger siblings.

First Impressions: Don’t Judge This Book by Its Cover

The thing about petit coronas in general is they don’t look impressive sitting in your humidor next to the robustos and toros. This one’s no different. At roughly 5 inches with a 42 ring gauge, it’s got the dimensions of what some people might call a “lunch break smoke.” But here’s where Partagas shows its craftsmanship – they’ve managed to pack the full Partagas experience into this compact format without losing any of the complexity.

Construction-wise, these are typically solid. I’ve had maybe three or four with draw issues out of hundreds (and one of those was definitely my fault – stored it too dry for about six months). The wrapper usually has this beautiful, oily Colorado shade that just screams quality Cuban tobacco. Sometimes you’ll get one that’s a bit veiny, but honestly? I’ve never found that affects the smoke.

The pre-light aroma is where things get interesting. While bigger Partagas cigars might be a bit more subtle in the foot, this petit corona hits you right away with that earthy, barnyard scent that Partagas is famous for. There’s cedar in there too, and sometimes – if you’re lucky – a hint of dark chocolate.

The Smoke: A Flavor Journey That Doesn’t Waste Time

Now, here’s where I’m gonna diverge from the typical “first third, second third, final third” breakdown that everyone does. That’s not how I smoke, and it’s sure not how this cigar reveals itself.

The first few puffs are all about earth and leather. Not subtle earth – we’re talking rich, loamy soil after a rainstorm kind of earth. The leather comes in waves, sometimes reminding me of an old baseball glove, other times more like the interior of a vintage car. There’s usually a slight pepper kick too, but nothing that’ll make you cough (unless you’re one of those people who takes massive draws like you’re trying to inhale the entire cigar at once).

About fifteen minutes in – and this is where the petit corona format really shines – you start getting these beautiful woody notes. Cedar, obviously, but there’s often oak in there too. Sometimes I swear I taste a hint of vanilla, though my friend Carlos insists I’m imagining things. (Carlos smokes nothing but Bolivars and thinks anything with complexity is “showing off,” so take that with a grain of salt.)

The middle portion is where this cigar either wins you over or loses you completely. The earthiness intensifies, and you start getting what I can only describe as mineral notes – like licking a clean stone, if that makes any sense. Some people hate this. I’ve seen guys stub out perfectly good Partagas cigars because they can’t handle that mineral, almost metallic undertone. But for me? That’s the signature. That’s what makes a Partagas a Partagas.

As you get toward the final inch (and yes, you can smoke this thing down to a nub if you’re patient), the flavors concentrate beautifully. The earth and leather are still there, but now there’s usually some sweetness – molasses, sometimes honey. The pepper comes back too, but it’s more refined now. More integrated.

What I Pair With This Beauty

Okay, this is where I might lose some of you traditional pairing folks. Everyone’s gonna tell you to pair Cuban cigars with rum or maybe a nice aged whiskey. And sure, I’ve done the Havana Club 15-year thing with Partagas cigars plenty of times. It works.

But my absolute favorite pairing with the Petit Corona? A strong Cuban coffee and a glass of mineral water. I know, I know – sounds weird. But hear me out. The coffee amplifies those earthy notes without competing with them, and the mineral water cleanses your palate between draws so you can really taste the transitions.

When I want alcohol, I usually go with a peaty Islay Scotch. Ardbeg 10, specifically. The smoke and peat from the whisky creates this incredible harmony with the earthiness of the cigar. It’s like they were made for each other.

I’ve also had great luck with dark porter beers. There’s a local brewery here that makes this chocolate porter that’s just phenomenal with these cigars. The roasted malt flavors complement the leather and earth beautifully.

Here’s what doesn’t work (learned this the hard way): anything too sweet or fruity. I tried pairing one with a nice Bordeaux once and it was a disaster. The wine just got completely overpowered.

Who Should (and Shouldn’t) Smoke These

Let me be straight with you – this isn’t a beginner’s cigar. I don’t care what some shop owner might tell you about petit coronas being “mild” because of their size. That’s nonsense. This is a full-flavored, complex smoke that’ll knock you on your ass if you’re not ready for it.

If you’re someone who enjoys earthy, mineral-heavy cigars and you don’t have a lot of time, this is perfect. It’s also great for experienced smokers who want to taste the full Partagas profile without committing to a two-hour smoke session.

On the flip side, if you prefer milder, creamier cigars (think Macanudo or even some of the milder Davidoffs), you should probably skip this one. And if you’re the type who needs big ring gauges to feel satisfied, this little guy isn’t gonna do it for you.

I also wouldn’t recommend these for outdoor smoking in windy conditions. The smaller ring gauge means they burn faster and less evenly when there’s a breeze. Save ’em for calm evenings or indoor smoking lounges.

Storage and Quirks: What You Need to Know

These cigars are pretty forgiving storage-wise, but I’ve found they really shine when kept at around 65% humidity rather than the standard 70%. At higher humidity, they can become a bit too earthy – almost muddy. At 65%, all those flavors stay distinct and balanced.

Here’s something weird I’ve noticed over the years: boxes from different years can vary dramatically. I’ve got some 2019s that are absolutely stellar, and some 2020s that are… well, let’s just say they’re not my favorites. This might be controversial, but I think the quality control on these has been a bit inconsistent lately. Not terrible, just inconsistent.

Also, if you’re buying these online (and let’s be honest, most of us are), pay attention to how they’re shipped. These smaller cigars seem more susceptible to shipping damage than bigger ones. I always request extra padding.

One more thing – and this is important – these cigars benefit tremendously from aging. Fresh ones can be quite harsh, all earth and pepper with little complexity. But give them two or three years in your humidor, and they transform into something really special. The earth mellows out, the secondary flavors develop, and that mineral note becomes more refined.

The Bottom Line (And My Controversial Take)

Here’s where I’m gonna say something that might get me some angry emails: I think the Partagas Petit Corona is better than the Serie D No. 4. There, I said it.

The Serie D gets all the attention, wins all the awards, costs twice as much. But this little petit corona cigar delivers 90% of that experience in half the time at a fraction of the cost. The flavors are more concentrated, the experience is more intense, and you don’t have to block out an entire evening to enjoy it.

Is it perfect? No. The construction can be inconsistent, the flavor profile isn’t for everyone, and you really need to age them to get the best experience. But when everything comes together – the right humidity, proper aging, good storage – this is one hell of a smoke.

Your Questions Answered

How long does it take to smoke? Usually about 45 minutes to an hour if you’re taking your time. I can stretch one to 75 minutes if I’m really savoring it, but anything longer than that and you’re probably smoking it too slowly.

Are these available year-round? In my experience, yes, but availability can vary depending on your source. They’re not a limited edition, so you shouldn’t have trouble finding them from reputable dealers.

How do they compare to other petit corona cigars? Night and day difference from most non-Cuban petit coronas. The closest comparison might be some of the stronger Nicaraguan petit coronas, but even those don’t have that distinctive mineral character that makes Partagas special.

Should I buy a box or try singles first? Definitely try a few singles first, especially if you’re not familiar with the Partagas flavor profile. These aren’t cheap, and they’re definitely not for everyone.

Look, after twenty-plus years of smoking cigars, I’ve learned that the best smoke isn’t always the biggest or most expensive one. Sometimes it’s the compact little powerhouse that delivers everything you want without any of the fuss. For me, the Partagas Petit Corona is exactly that kind of cigar.
