Partagas Coronas Review: Like Finding an Old Hemingway Novel at a Garage Sale
You know that feeling when you’re browsing through dusty books at some random garage sale, and you stumble across a beat-up first edition of “For Whom the Bell Tolls”? That’s exactly what smoking a Partagas Coronas feels like – discovering something with serious literary weight that’s been quietly sitting there, underappreciated by the masses who are chasing after the flashier new releases.
I’ve been smoking cuban corona cigars for over two decades now, and let me tell you something that might ruffle a few feathers: the Partagas Coronas is criminally underrated. While everyone’s obsessing over Cohibas and Montecristo No. 2s (don’t get me wrong, they’re fantastic), this little workhorse has been delivering consistent excellence at a fraction of the hype.
First Impressions: The Unassuming Champion
The Partagas Coronas doesn’t try to impress you with fancy bands or perfect oily wrappers. It’s got that honest Cuban look – slightly rustic, maybe a few small veins, but with that unmistakable toothy texture that tells you it’s the real deal. The 5.6″ x 42 ring gauge feels just right in your hand. Not too thick like those Churchill monsters that take three hours to smoke, but substantial enough that you know you’re in for a proper session.
When I first picked one up back in ’03 (during a memorable trip to Montreal where the snow was three feet deep and the cigar shops were like warm havens), the pre-light draw had this earthy, almost barnyard quality. Some people are put off by that characteristic Cuban “farm” smell, but to me? That’s authenticity right there.
The cold draw gives you hints of what’s coming – leather, cedar, maybe a touch of cocoa. Nothing too aggressive, but there’s definitely personality lurking underneath that wrapper.
The Smoke: A Journey Worth Taking
Here’s where I’m going to break from the typical “first third, second third, final third” BS that everyone else writes. Cigars don’t smoke in perfect segments like some kind of flavor-layered cake. They evolve, they surprise you, they sometimes disappoint you five minutes in and then redeem themselves twenty minutes later.
The Partagas Coronas lights up beautifully – I prefer cedar spills myself, though matches work fine if you’re not being precious about it. Those first few puffs are all about earth and leather. There’s this underlying spice that’s not quite pepper, not quite cinnamon… it’s that distinctive Partagas DNA that runs through their entire line.
About fifteen minutes in (and this is where it gets interesting), you start getting these waves of complexity. Coffee grounds appear, then fade. A hint of dark chocolate surfaces, disappears, comes back stronger. The earthiness never really leaves – it’s like the bass line in a jazz song, holding everything together while the other flavors improvise over top.
What I love about these cuban corona cigars is how they respond to your smoking pace. Puff too aggressively and they’ll bite back with harsh nicotine and bitter tannins. But smoke them slowly, respectfully, and they reward you with layers that most people never discover because they’re rushing through like they’ve got somewhere urgent to be.
The middle portion (okay, I lied about not using thirds, but bear with me) is where the Partagas Coronas really shines. The spice mellows out and you get these beautiful nutty notes – almonds, maybe hazelnuts. There’s often a subtle sweetness that creeps in, like brown sugar or even molasses on a good day.
The final act? That’s where you separate the wheat from the chaff. Lesser cigars fall apart here, becoming harsh or bland or just plain unsmokable. The Partagas Coronas maintains its composure right down to that last inch. Sure, it gets stronger – the nicotine definitely ramps up – but it never becomes unpleasant if you’ve been treating it right.
Perfect Pairings: What Works (And What Doesn’t)
I’ve paired these cigars with everything from gas station coffee to 25-year-old single malt, and here’s what I’ve learned through trial and error (mostly error, if I’m being honest).
Coffee works beautifully, but not just any coffee. You want something with body but not too much acidity. I’ve had great success with a good Cuban espresso – there’s something poetic about pairing Cuban tobacco with Cuban coffee beans. Avoid those fancy light roasts that taste like fruit juice; they clash horribly with the earthy Partagas profile.
For rum, I’m partial to Flor de Caña 12-year or, if you can find it, some aged Havana Club. The caramel notes in aged rum complement the nutty sweetness that develops in the cigar. I made the mistake once of pairing it with a spiced rum (Captain Morgan, don’t judge me) and it was like watching a food fight – too many competing flavors.
Whiskey? Trickier territory. Peated Scotches are right out – the smoke-on-smoke thing doesn’t work here. But a good bourbon with some sweetness, like Maker’s Mark or even better, something like Blanton’s if you’re feeling flush, can be absolutely magical.
Wine pairings are where I might lose some of you traditional folks, but hear me out. A nice Tempranillo or even a well-aged Rioja can work wonders. The tannins in the wine play nicely with the leather notes in the cigar. Just don’t try it with Pinot Grigio or anything too delicate – you’ll obliterate the wine.
Who Should Smoke These (And Who Shouldn’t)
This is where I’m going to be brutally honest, and some people aren’t going to like what I have to say.
If you’re new to cigars, start elsewhere. I know that sounds elitist, but the Partagas Coronas is like recommending Coltrane to someone who’s never heard jazz. You need to develop your palate first with milder stuff – maybe some Macanudos or even non-Cuban alternatives – before you can really appreciate what’s happening here.
These are perfect for the intermediate to advanced smoker who wants authenticity over flash. If you’re the type who photographs every cigar for Instagram and cares more about the band than what’s inside, these probably aren’t for you. They don’t photograph particularly well, and half your followers won’t recognize them anyway.
They’re ideal for contemplative smoking. I’ve enjoyed some of my best Partagas Coronas while reading (anything by García Márquez seems particularly appropriate), or during those long conversations that stretch into the evening. They demand attention but don’t overwhelm you.
Skip these if you only smoke on special occasions and want something that screams “premium experience.” While these are absolutely premium cigars, they’re more like that perfectly broken-in leather jacket than a tuxedo.
Storage and Aging: A Few Hard-Learned Lessons
Here’s something most reviews won’t tell you: Partagas Coronas can be finicky about humidity. I learned this the hard way when I first started collecting seriously. Keep them at 65-67% humidity, no higher. Too much moisture and they become plugged and difficult to draw. Too little and they burn hot and harsh.
These cigars age beautifully, but they’re also perfectly smokeable young. I’ve got a box from 2019 that’s just hitting its stride now – the harshness has mellowed out and the complexity has deepened considerably. But I’ve also enjoyed them fresh off the truck (so to speak) when they still had that youthful vigor.
Temperature matters too. I keep mine in a dedicated cabinet at around 65°F. Any warmer and the oils start breaking down; any cooler and they go dormant. It’s like they’re sleeping and won’t wake up properly when you light them.
One quirk I’ve noticed: these cigars seem to smoke better in cooler weather. Something about the atmospheric pressure or humidity, I’m not sure. But my best Partagas Coronas experiences have been on crisp autumn evenings or during those perfect spring days when there’s still a bit of bite in the air.
The Bottom Line: Honest Excellence
In a world full of marketing hype and artificial scarcity, the Partagas Coronas is refreshingly straightforward. It doesn’t pretend to be anything other than what it is: a well-made Cuban cigar that delivers consistent quality and complex flavors without breaking the bank or requiring you to know someone who knows someone.
Are they perfect? No cigar is perfect every time. I’ve had the occasional dud – maybe one in every twenty has construction issues or flavor problems. But that’s actually better odds than some of the more expensive marquee brands.
The value proposition here is outstanding. You’re getting genuine cuban corona cigars with real character and complexity for significantly less than what you’d pay for comparable quality from other major Cuban brands. It’s like finding a great neighborhood restaurant that doesn’t need to advertise because the food speaks for itself.
Frequently Asked Questions
How do these compare to other Corona-sized Cuban cigars?
They’re earthier and spicier than H. Upmann Coronas, more approachable than Bolivar Coronas Junior, and more consistent than Romeo y Julieta Coronas. Each has its place, but the Partagas offers the best balance of complexity and reliability in my experience.
Can I age these for years like premium Cohibas?
Absolutely. I’ve smoked ten-year-old Partagas Coronas that were absolutely stunning – all the rough edges polished off, incredible depth and smoothness. They may not command collector prices, but they age just as gracefully.
What’s the smoking time?
Plan on 45 minutes to an hour and fifteen minutes, depending on your pace. I’m a slow smoker (my wife says I’m slow at everything), so I usually get about 70 minutes out of one.
Are these full-strength cigars?
Medium to medium-full. They definitely have presence and you’ll feel the nicotine, especially toward the end, but they won’t knock you over like some of the Bolivar or Partagas Serie D cigars.
After twenty-plus years of smoking cigars, I keep coming back to the Partagas Coronas because they remind me why I fell in love with Cuban tobacco in the first place. They’re honest, complex, and utterly satisfying without any of the pretension that’s crept into this hobby over the years. In my humidor, they’ve earned permanent resident status, and that’s saying something.
