Tasting Notes

Rich, complex Cuban flavors with notes of earth, cedar, leather, and spice.

Montecristo Open Eagle Tubos: When Size Matters (And Sometimes It Doesn’t)

Picture this: you’re sitting on your back deck on a Saturday evening, the grill’s still warm from dinner, and you’ve got about two hours before you need to be anywhere else. That’s exactly when I cracked open my first Montecristo tubo containing an Open Eagle. The sun was just starting to dip below the neighbor’s oak tree, and I figured – hell, let’s see what all the fuss is about with these big boys.

I’ll be honest right up front. I’ve been smoking cigars for over two decades now, and I’ve got a complicated relationship with these monster vitolas. Sometimes they’re magnificent. Sometimes they’re just… big for the sake of being big. The Open Eagle sits at a hefty 5.5″ x 54 ring gauge – not the biggest cigar in the world, but substantial enough that you’re committing to an experience, not just a quick smoke.

First Impressions: The Good, Bad, and the Tubular

Let’s talk about that tubo first. I know some purists turn their nose up at aluminum tubes (my buddy Carlos swears they affect the aging process), but damn if they aren’t convenient. Especially if you’re like me and sometimes grab a cigar for a round of golf or a fishing trip. The Montecristo tubo keeps things pristine, and there’s something satisfying about that little “pop” when you twist it open.

The wrapper on these Open Eagles has been consistently good in my experience. Nice medium-brown Colorado shade, minimal veins, and that classic Cuban sandwich feel – not too firm, not too soft. I’ve gone through maybe eight or nine of these over the past couple years, and only had one with a significant wrapper issue (a small tear that didn’t affect the smoke, thankfully).

Construction-wise? They’re solid. Not spectacular, but solid. The cap cuts clean, the draw is usually right in that sweet spot – maybe 7 out of 10 in terms of resistance. I’ve never had one completely fall apart on me, which is more than I can say for some other Cuban marcas I won’t name here.

The Flavor Journey (Or: Why I Don’t Believe in Thirds)

Look, I’m gonna go against conventional wisdom here for a second. All this talk about “first third, second third, final third” drives me nuts. Cigars aren’t novels with neat little chapters. They’re more like jazz performances – sometimes the best stuff happens in the transitions, and sometimes the whole experience is about subtle variations on a theme.

That said, here’s how the Open Eagle typically unfolds for me:

Right out of the gate, you’re getting that classic Montecristo DNA – earthy, woody, with just a hint of that barn-like mustiness that tells you this tobacco saw some real fermentation time. There’s usually a touch of white pepper on the retrohale (and if you’re not retrohaling, we need to have a different conversation entirely).

About twenty minutes in – and this is where the Open Eagle starts to show its personality – you get these waves of cocoa. Not chocolate exactly, more like raw cocoa powder. It comes and goes, which keeps things interesting. I’ve noticed this seems more pronounced if the cigar’s been sitting in your humidor for at least six months. Fresh ones can be a bit sharp.

The middle stretch is where size starts to matter. With a smaller vitola, you might rush through flavor transitions. But the Open Eagle gives you time to really sit with each phase. There’s this leathery note that develops – not overwhelming, just enough to add complexity. And if you’re paying attention (put the damn phone away), you’ll catch hints of coffee bean and maybe even some mineral notes.

Here’s where I might lose some of you: I actually think the final portion is where this cigar shines brightest. Yeah, I know, conventional wisdom says Cuban cigars peak in the middle. But the Open Eagle develops this rich, almost creamy character in the last hour. The earth notes deepen, the pepper mellows out, and you get this wonderful tobacco sweetness that makes you understand why people obsess over this hobby.

What I’m Drinking (Because It Matters)

Pairing’s gotten way too precious in recent years, but I’ll share what’s worked for me. Early on, I like a good aged rum – I’ve had great experiences with El Dorado 15 year and Diplomatico Reserva Exclusiva. The sweetness complements without competing, and both have enough depth to hold up to the cigar.

Midway through, I’ll sometimes switch to coffee. Black. None of this flavored nonsense. A good Ethiopian single-origin if I’m feeling fancy, but honestly, even decent diner coffee works. There’s something about the bitter-earthy combination that brings out those cocoa notes I mentioned.

For the final stretch? This might sound crazy, but try a quality bourbon. Not something overly peated or complex – I’m talking Four Roses Single Barrel or maybe Elijah Craig Small Batch. The vanilla and caramel notes create this beautiful harmony with the tobacco sweetness that develops.

And if you’re not drinking alcohol? Club soda with lime. Seriously. The citrus cleanses your palate between puffs, and the bubbles… I don’t know why, but it works.

Who Should Smoke This (And Who Shouldn’t)

Here’s my honest take: the Open Eagle isn’t for beginners. Not because it’s particularly strong (it’s medium-bodied at most), but because it’s a time commitment, and new smokers often don’t have the patience to really appreciate what’s happening.

It’s perfect for experienced smokers who want that classic Montecristo profile in a size that lets them really explore it. If you’re the type who enjoys a slow Saturday afternoon smoke, or you’ve got a regular poker game that goes long, this is your stick.

Business smokers love them too. That tubo means you can throw one in a briefcase without worry, and the size says “I’m successful enough to take my time with the good stuff.” (Yeah, it’s a little pretentious, but business is pretentious.)

Who should skip it? Anyone looking for a quick smoke. Anyone who finds medium-bodied cigars boring. And frankly, anyone who’s not willing to spend 90+ minutes really paying attention. This isn’t a cigar you smoke while working on your laptop.

Storage Tips and Insider Knowledge

The tubo’s great for transport, but don’t store them in there long-term. I learned this the hard way about ten years ago when I left a box of tubos untouched for two years. The cigars were fine, but they didn’t develop the way they should have. Aluminum doesn’t breathe like wood does.

Take them out, put them in your regular humidor, and use the tubes when you need portability. Keep your humidity around 65-67% – these bigger ring gauges can handle slightly lower humidity better than skinny cigars, and you’ll avoid burn issues.

Here’s something most people don’t know: the Open Eagle actually benefits from a bit of age. I know, I know, conventional wisdom says smoke Cuban cigars young. But I’ve had Open Eagles with three or four years on them, and they develop this incredible smoothness and depth. The harsh edges completely disappear.

One more thing – and this is just personal preference – I like to take the band off about halfway through. Not immediately (let the wrapper warm up first), but before you get to the final third. I swear the flavors open up more without that extra paper layer, even though it’s probably all in my head.

The Controversial Bit

Alright, here’s where I’m gonna ruffle some feathers: I think the Open Eagle is actually better than the more famous Montecristo No. 2. Yeah, I said it. The No. 2 gets all the press, all the love from collectors, but the Open Eagle gives you a purer expression of what Montecristo tobacco is all about, without the sometimes unpredictable burn issues you get with figurados.

The No. 2’s got that sexy torpedo shape, sure, but give me consistent construction and a clean burn line over aesthetics any day. I’ve smoked probably fifty No. 2s over the years, and maybe half were truly exceptional. With the Open Eagle, my success rate’s closer to 80%.

Common Questions (Because People Always Ask)

How long does it actually take to smoke one?

Plan on 90 minutes minimum. I’m a fairly fast smoker, and it still takes me at least that long. If you’re really savoring it, two hours isn’t unusual.

Are the tubes really necessary?

For transport? Absolutely. For storage? No. They’re convenient, not essential.

How do these compare to Dominican Montecristos?

Completely different animals. The Dominican versions are good cigars, but they’re playing a different game entirely. Cuban Montecristos have that earthy, mineral complexity you just can’t replicate elsewhere.

Should I age them?

If you’ve got the patience, yes. But they’re perfectly smokeable fresh too. Unlike some Cuban cigars that really need time, the Open Eagle is pretty forgiving.

Final Thoughts

The Montecristo Open Eagle Tubo isn’t going to change your life or revolutionize your understanding of cigars. But it’s a damn solid representation of one of Cuba’s most respected marcas, in a size that gives you time to really appreciate what’s happening.

At around $25-30 per stick (depending on where you’re buying), it’s not cheap, but it’s not outrageous either. You’re paying for quality tobacco, solid construction, and that little bit of convenience the tubo provides.

Would I buy them again? Already have. In fact, I keep a few in my travel humidor pretty much all the time. They’re reliable, enjoyable, and just different enough from the standard Montecristo lineup to keep things interesting.

Just remember – when you light one up, you’re signing up for the long haul. Put the phone away, pour something good, and give it the attention it deserves. That’s really the only way to smoke a cigar like this.
