Montecristo Open Eagle Tubos: When Size Matters (And Sometimes It Doesn’t)
Picture this: you’re sitting on your back deck on a Saturday evening, the grill’s still warm from dinner, and you’ve got about two hours before you need to be anywhere else. They’re more like jazz performances – sometimes the best stuff happens in the transitions, and sometimes the whole experience is about subtle variations on a theme.
That said, here’s how the Open Eagle typically unfolds for me:
Right out of the gate, you’re getting that classic Montecristo DNA – earthy, woody, with just a hint of that barn-like mustiness that tells you this tobacco saw some real fermentation time. Here’s my honest take: the Open Eagle isn’t for beginners. Not because it’s particularly strong (it’s medium-bodied at most), but because it’s a time commitment, and new smokers often don’t have the patience to really appreciate what’s happening.
It’s perfect for experienced smokers who want that classic Montecristo profile in a size that lets them really explore it. If you’re the type who enjoys a slow Saturday afternoon smoke, or you’ve got a regular poker game that goes long, this is your stick.
Business smokers love them too. That tubo means you can throw one in a briefcase without worry, and the size says “I’m successful enough to take my time with the good stuff.” (Yeah, it’s a little pretentious, but business is pretentious.)
Who should skip it? Anyone looking for a quick smoke. Anyone who finds medium-bodied cigars boring. And frankly, anyone who’s not willing to spend 90+ minutes really paying attention. This isn’t a cigar you smoke while working on your laptop.
Storage Tips and Insider Knowledge
The tubo’s great for transport, but don’t store them in there long-term. I learned this the hard way about ten years ago when I left a box of tubos untouched for two years. The cigars were fine, but they didn’t develop the way they should have. Aluminum doesn’t breathe like wood does.

The Controversial Bit
Alright, here’s where I’m gonna ruffle some feathers: I think the Open Eagle is actually better than the more famous Montecristo No. 2. Yeah, I said it. The No. 2 gets all the press, all the love from collectors, but the Open Eagle gives you a purer expression of what Montecristo tobacco is all about, without the sometimes unpredictable burn issues you get with figurados.
The No. 2’s got that sexy torpedo shape, sure, but give me consistent construction and a clean burn line over aesthetics any day. I’ve smoked probably fifty No. 2s over the years, and maybe half were truly exceptional. With the Open Eagle, my success rate’s closer to 80%.

How long does it actually take to smoke one?
Plan on 90 minutes minimum. I’m a fairly fast smoker, and it still takes me at least that long. If you’re really savoring it, two hours isn’t unusual.
Are the tubes really necessary?
For transport? Absolutely. For storage? No. They’re convenient, not essential.
How do these compare to Dominican Montecristos?
Completely different animals. The Dominican versions are good cigars, but they’re playing a different game entirely. Cuban Montecristos have that earthy, mineral complexity you just can’t replicate elsewhere.
Should I age them?
If you’ve got the patience, yes. But they’re perfectly smokeable fresh too. Unlike some Cuban cigars that really need time, the Open Eagle is pretty forgiving.

The Montecristo Open Eagle Tubo isn’t going to change your life or revolutionize your understanding of cigars. But it’s a damn solid representation of one of Cuba’s most respected marcas, in a size that gives you time to really appreciate what’s happening.
At around $25-30 per stick (depending on where you’re buying), it’s not cheap, but it’s not outrageous either. You’re paying for quality tobacco, solid construction, and that little bit of convenience the tubo provides.
Would I buy them again? Already have. In fact, I keep a few in my travel humidor pretty much all the time. They’re reliable, enjoyable, and just different enough from the standard Montecristo lineup to keep things interesting.
Just remember – when you light one up, you’re signing up for the long haul. Put the phone away, pour something good, and give it the attention it deserves. That’s really the only way to smoke a cigar like this.

Decent cigar but not my favorite from Montecristo. The Montecristo Open Eagle Tubos (3) has good flavor – cedar and coffee – but didn’t wow me like other Cubans I’ve had. Construction was fine, burn was mostly even. It’s good, just not exceptional. Worth trying though.
