The Truth About Montecristo Churchill Añejados – They’re Not What You Think

Here’s the thing that drives me nuts – everyone assumes that just because it says “Montecristo Churchill” on the band, these Añejados are gonna smoke exactly like the regular production Churchill. Wrong. Dead wrong. I’ve been smoking Cubans for over two decades now, and I can tell you that the aging process these sticks go through changes them completely. It’s like comparing a 15-year-old bourbon to the same juice that’s been sitting in barrels for 25 years.

I first got my hands on a box of these back in 2019 through a connection in Switzerland (won’t name names, but you know how it is). The guy told me they’d been aged for an additional 5-8 years beyond the normal process, and honestly? I was skeptical. The Montecristo Churchill Extra that most of us know and love already has such a developed profile – what more could time do?

Boy, was I in for a surprise.

First Light – When Expectations Meet Reality

The first thing that hit me was the cold draw. Now, I’ve probably smoked hundreds of regular Monte Churchills over the years, and they typically give you that classic Cuban hay and barnyard funk on the cold draw. The Añejados? Completely different animal. Sweet cedar, almost like you’re smelling the inside of a humidor that’s been seasoned for decades. There’s this underlying nuttiness that I’d never experienced with the regular production.

The wrapper looked different too – not dramatically, but if you know what to look for, it’s there. More of a colorado claro shade, with this almost waxy sheen to it. The aging process had definitely mellowed out some of the oils, giving it this refined, almost aristocratic appearance. (My buddy Carlos – old-timer from Havana who taught me half of what I know about cigars – always said you can spot properly aged tobacco just by looking at it. He was right.)

Construction was flawless. I mean, absolutely perfect. Even burn, perfect draw resistance, ash that held on for nearly two inches before I had to tap it off. Say what you want about Cuban quality control issues in recent years, but when they put out something like the Añejados line, they’re not messing around.

The Flavor Journey – This Isn’t Your Grandfather’s Monte

Okay, here’s where I’m gonna break from the typical “thirds” breakdown because that’s not how these cigars smoke. The Añejados don’t follow the usual pattern where you get distinct flavor changes at each third. Instead, it’s this gradual evolution that happens so smoothly you almost don’t notice it until you’re suddenly tasting something completely different from where you started.

Right off the bat, there’s this creamy sweetness that I’ve never gotten from a regular Monte Churchill. It’s subtle – not like those honey-dipped cigars that some people seem to love (though personally, I think flavored cigars are an abomination, but to each their own). This is natural sweetness that comes from the tobacco itself having had time to marry all its flavors together.

About twenty minutes in, the classic Montecristo earthiness starts to emerge, but it’s refined. Polished. Like instead of getting hit with a sledgehammer of Cuban soil, you’re getting a gentle reminder of where this tobacco came from. There’s leather there too, but not the harsh, tannic leather you sometimes get from younger cigars. This is like the leather armchair in a gentleman’s club that’s been worn smooth by decades of use.

The middle section (and I hate calling it that because it’s really more of a gradual transition) brings in these incredible baking spice notes. Cinnamon, definitely. Maybe a touch of nutmeg. My wife – who normally can’t stand the smell of my cigars – actually commented that it smelled like Christmas morning. I was smoking this on my back porch last December, and she wasn’t wrong.

Here’s where it gets interesting though. In the final portion, instead of getting stronger like most Cubans do, the Añejados actually get more complex while maintaining the same strength level. It’s like the tobacco is showing off everything it learned during those extra years of aging. Wood notes come forward – not just cedar, but deeper, richer woods. Mahogany, maybe even some oak influence.

What I’m Drinking When I Smoke These

Look, I’ve tried these with everything from coffee to cognac, and here’s what works best: a good aged rum. Not that spiced garbage, but something like El Dorado 21 or if you can get your hands on it, Diplomatico Reserva Exclusiva. The sweetness in the rum complements that natural tobacco sweetness without competing with it.

That said, I had one of these with a glass of Macallan 18 last New Year’s Eve, and it was absolutely sublime. The sherry cask influence in the scotch played beautifully with those baking spice notes I mentioned. Just don’t go crazy with the peated stuff – tried it once with Laphroaig and it was like having two separate experiences that never quite meshed together.

Coffee works too, but only in the morning, and only with something dark and rich. I’ve had good luck with Cuban coffee (obviously) or a really good French roast. The bitterness of the coffee actually brings out more of the sweetness in the cigar, which sounds counterintuitive but trust me on this one.

Who Should Smoke These (And Who Shouldn’t Bother)

Here’s my controversial take: if you’re new to Cuban cigars, don’t start with these. I know, I know – everyone wants to jump straight to the premium stuff, but you’re wasting your money. The subtlety and complexity that makes these special will be completely lost on an undeveloped palate. It’s like giving someone who’s only had Budweiser a $200 bottle of wine – they’re not gonna appreciate what they’re getting.

These are for the Cuban aficionado who’s already familiar with the regular Monte Churchill and wants to experience what time can do to tobacco. If you’ve been smoking Cubans for at least a few years and you understand what you’re tasting when you smoke them, then yeah, these are absolutely worth the premium price.

Also – and this might ruffle some feathers – I think these are better suited for experienced smokers who prefer medium-strength cigars. If you’re the type who needs a Partagas Serie D No. 4 to feel like you’ve smoked something substantial, the Añejados might leave you feeling like you didn’t get your money’s worth. The strength is there, but it’s refined strength, not the punch-you-in-the-face strength that some Cuban smokers crave.

Storage and Handling – Learn From My Mistakes

Don’t make the same mistake I did with my first box. I stored them at 70% humidity like I do with most of my Cubans, and after a few months, they started getting a bit too moist. These aged tobaccos seem to prefer slightly lower humidity – I’ve had better results keeping them around 65-67%.

Temperature matters more with these than with regular production cigars too. I learned this the hard way when I left a few in my car during a hot summer day (don’t ask, it was a long story involving a wedding and too many drinks). The heat damaged them in a way that would’ve been recoverable with younger tobacco, but with these aged leaves, it was permanent damage.

One more thing – let them acclimate if you’re ordering online. I know it’s tempting to smoke one right out of the box, but give them at least a week in your humidor first. The shipping can stress these aged tobaccos more than regular cigars.

The Bottom Line on These Beauties

Are they worth the premium over regular Monte Churchills? If you’ve got the budget and the palate to appreciate them, absolutely. They’re a completely different smoking experience that showcases what proper aging can do to already excellent tobacco.

That said, they’re not an everyday smoke for most people. At the prices these command, they’re special occasion cigars. I save mine for celebrations, quiet evenings when I’ve got two hours to really focus on what I’m smoking, or when I’m sharing with someone who I know will appreciate what they’re getting.

The complexity is there, the construction is impeccable, and the flavor profile is unlike anything else in the Monte lineup. Just don’t expect them to be a stronger version of the regular Churchill – they’re their own thing entirely, and that’s exactly what makes them special.

Quick FAQs From Real Smokers

How long should I age these before smoking?

They’re ready to smoke when you get them, but honestly? I think they continue to improve for another 2-3 years if you can wait that long.

Are these stronger than regular Monte Churchills?

No, actually the opposite. The aging process mellows out the strength while increasing complexity.

Can I find these at regular retailers?

Good luck. These are limited releases and most of them get snapped up by collectors and serious enthusiasts. Your best bet is establishing relationships with reputable online dealers who can get you on waiting lists.

What’s the shelf life once I open the box?

Properly stored, these will continue to improve for years. I’ve got some from 2019 that are smoking better now than when I first got them.

Bottom line? If you can get your hands on a box and you’ve got the experience to appreciate what you’re smoking, don’t hesitate. These represent Cuban cigar making at its finest, and they’re a reminder of why we fell in love with this hobby in the first place.
