About This Cigar

A premium Cuban cigar from Montecristo.

Tasting Notes

Rich, complex Cuban flavors with notes of earth, cedar, leather, and spice.

The Ritual and the Reality: My First Dance with Montecristo 80th Anniversary Cigars

I’m about halfway through this behemoth right now, and I’ve gotta tell you – the ash is holding like a champ at nearly two inches. That’s always a good sign with premium Cubans, but honestly? I wasn’t sure what to expect from these Montecristo 80 Aniversario sticks when I first got my hands on them last month.

See, anniversary releases can be hit or miss. Sometimes they’re genuine masterpieces that justify the hype (and the price tag). Other times they’re just marketing wrapped around tobacco that’s good but not necessarily special. After twenty-three years of chasing smoke rings and burning through more cigars than my wife cares to count, I’ve learned to approach these commemorative releases with cautious optimism.

The Montecristo 80th anniversary cigars came to me through a buddy who runs a small shop in Miami – one of those guys who’s got connections you wouldn’t believe and somehow always lands the good stuff before anyone else. “Trust me on this one,” he said, sliding the box across his counter with that knowing grin. That was three weeks ago, and I’ve been rationing these beauties ever since.

First Impressions: The Good, The Beautiful, and The Expensive

Right out of the box, these things are stunners. The construction is what you’d expect from a premium Monte – flawless wrapper with that characteristic Cuban sheen, perfect cap, and a weight that feels substantial without being dense. The bands are gorgeous too, though I’ll be honest – I’m getting a little tired of the gold-heavy anniversary band designs. They all start looking the same after a while.

What caught my attention immediately was the pre-light aroma. Most Montecristos have that familiar barnyard and leather thing going on, but these 80th anniversary sticks have something else. There’s a sweetness there – not fruity exactly, but almost like aged wood with honey undertones. My smoking buddy Carlos (who’s got a better palate than me, if I’m being honest) picked up on vanilla and cocoa when we split one last weekend.

The cold draw was perfect. Not too tight, not too loose – just that slight resistance that lets you know you’re in for a good time. And the foot? Beautiful blend of light and dark tobaccos visible in that classic Cuban style.

The First Third: Setting the Stage

I always toast the foot slowly with Cuban premiums. These deserve respect, and rushing the light is just asking for trouble. The initial puffs delivered exactly what I was hoping for – clean, smooth smoke with immediate complexity. None of that harsh bite you sometimes get from cigars that haven’t had enough rest time.

The flavor profile started with classic Montecristo earthiness, but there was definitely more going on. Within the first few draws, I was picking up notes of cedar, leather (but softer than usual), and what I can only describe as coffee grounds – not brewed coffee, but those fresh-ground beans with all their oils and aromatics intact.

What surprised me most was how refined everything tasted right from the start. Usually with Cuban cigars, even the good ones, you get some rough edges in the first third that smooth out as you progress. Not here. These montecristo 80th anniversary cigars came out swinging with polish and sophistication that honestly made me a little worried about the price point I’d eventually discover.

The burn was exemplary – razor-sharp line, minimal corrections needed. The ash built up in that beautiful light gray that tells you the tobacco was properly aged and fermented. Construction-wise, I couldn’t ask for more.

Middle Passages: Where Things Get Interesting

Around the halfway point (where I am as I type this, actually), the flavor profile really started opening up. That initial earthiness gave way to more complex notes – dried fruits, nuts, and what I swear is a hint of dark chocolate. Not the sweet milk chocolate you get in some Nicaraguan blends, but that rich, slightly bitter dark chocolate that pairs so well with aged rum.

Speaking of pairing – I’ve tried these with several different drinks now, and my favorite combination so far has been with a glass of Zacapa 23. The rum’s honey and vanilla notes complement the cigar’s sweetness perfectly, while the slight spice in both creates this incredible synergy. I also tried one with a cup of Cuban coffee (seemed appropriate), and while good, it was almost too much intensity. The coffee overwhelmed some of the subtler flavors.

My buddy Mike, who usually sticks to Davidoffs and other non-Cuban premiums, tried one of these last week and admitted (grudgingly) that it might be the best Cuban cigar he’s ever had. That’s saying something, because Mike’s usually pretty vocal about his preference for Dominican and Nicaraguan tobacco.

The nicotine level is medium-plus, I’d say. Definitely noticeable but not overwhelming. I wouldn’t recommend these as a first smoke of the day unless you’ve had a substantial breakfast, but they’re not going to knock you on your ass either.

The Final Act: Sticking the Landing

The last third is where these Montecristo 80th anniversary cigars really prove their worth. Instead of turning bitter or harsh like so many cigars do in the final stretch, they maintain that smoothness while actually intensifying the complexity. The chocolate notes become more pronounced, and there’s this wonderful spiciness that develops – not pepper exactly, but something more sophisticated. Almost like baking spices.

I’ve smoked these down to about an inch and a half without any issues. No harshness, no need to purge, just consistent quality smoke right to the end. That’s the mark of truly exceptional tobacco and expert construction.

The finish lingers too – in a good way. Twenty minutes after putting one down, I’m still getting flavor echoes on my palate. That’s something you just don’t get with most cigars, even premium ones.

Real Talk: Who Should Buy These (And Who Shouldn’t)

Let’s be honest about the elephant in the room – these aren’t cheap. At all. I haven’t seen official pricing yet, but based on similar anniversary releases, you’re probably looking at $40-60 per stick, minimum. Maybe more depending on your source and availability.

Are they worth it? For experienced smokers who appreciate Cuban craftsmanship and have the budget for premium smokes, absolutely. These are special occasion cigars – the kind you break out for celebrations, important milestones, or when you’re trying to impress someone who knows their tobacco.

But if you’re new to cigars, or if you’re primarily a budget smoker, skip these for now. Not because they’re not excellent – they absolutely are – but because you’ll get more education and enjoyment working your way up through more affordable Montecristos first. Try some regular production Monte No. 2s or No. 4s, learn the brand’s flavor profile, and then come back to these when you can really appreciate what makes them special.

Also, if you’re someone who prefers fuller-bodied, in-your-face cigars (think Padron Anniversary series or Liga Privada), these might not hit the right notes for you. The Montecristo 80th anniversary cigars are sophisticated and complex, but they’re not aggressive. They’re more about finesse than power.

Storage and Handling: Don’t Screw These Up

These are Cuban premiums, which means they need proper care. I’m keeping mine at 65% humidity – any higher and you risk the burn issues that plague a lot of Cuban cigars. Temperature-wise, I try to stay between 65-70 degrees Fahrenheit.

Give them time to acclimate if you’re ordering online. I let mine sit in my humidor for a full week before trying the first one, and I think that rest time made a real difference in how smoothly they smoked.

One thing I’ve noticed with these particular sticks – they seem to handle slight humidity variations better than some other Cuban premiums I’ve stored. Not that you should be careless, but they’re not as finicky as some of the more temperamental marca lines.

The Controversial Take: Are Anniversary Cigars Worth the Premium?

Here’s where I might ruffle some feathers – most anniversary cigars aren’t worth the extra money you pay for them. They’re often just regular production tobacco in fancier packaging with a higher price tag.

But these Montecristo 80th anniversary cigars? They’re different. The tobacco quality is noticeably superior to regular production Montes. The construction is impeccable. The flavor complexity is genuinely impressive. Are they twice as good as a regular Monte No. 2? Probably not. But they’re definitely a significant step up in quality.

My theory is that Habanos actually put some serious thought and premium aged tobacco into this release. It’s not just marketing fluff – there’s substance behind the hype.

Quick Answers to Questions You’re Probably Asking

How do they compare to other premium Montecristos? They’re smoother and more complex than regular production Montes, with better construction across the board.

What’s the smoking time? Plan for 90 minutes to two hours, depending on your smoking pace and the size you choose.

Are they available in multiple sizes? From what I’ve seen, yes, but availability varies wildly depending on your location and dealer relationships.

Should I age them further? They’re smoking beautifully right now, but if you’ve got the patience, another year or two might add even more complexity.

Best time of day to smoke them? These are substantial enough for evening smokes but refined enough for afternoon enjoyment. I wouldn’t waste one first thing in the morning when your palate isn’t fully awake.

The Bottom Line

The Montecristo 80 Aniversario lives up to the hype, which honestly surprised me. In a market flooded with overpromised anniversary releases, these actually deliver something special. They’re expensive, yes, but they’re also genuinely exceptional cigars that showcase what Cuban tobacco can achieve when everything comes together perfectly.

If you can afford them and you appreciate premium cigars, grab some while you can find them. If the price point makes you wince, stick with regular production Montecristos and maybe splurge on one of these for a truly special occasion.

As for me? I’ve got three left in my humidor, and I’m already trying to figure out what occasions are worthy of them. That’s probably the best endorsement I can give any cigar.
