About This Cigar

A premium Cuban cigar from Cohiba.

Tasting Notes

Rich, complex Cuban flavors with notes of earth, cedar, leather, and spice.

What Everyone Gets Wrong About the Cohiba Piramides EXTRA

Here’s the thing that drives me absolutely nuts about most reviews of the Cohiba Piramides EXTRA – everyone’s so busy genuflecting at the altar of the Cohiba name that they forget to actually smoke the damn cigar. I’ve been at this for over two decades now, and I can’t tell you how many times I’ve watched guys light up el piramide with this reverent, almost religious expression, like they’re about to commune with the ghost of Che Guevara himself.

Look, I get it. Cohiba’s the flagship. The crown jewel. But here’s what I learned after smoking probably fifty of these over the years (and yes, I kept count because I’m that kind of nerd): this isn’t your typical Cohiba experience. Not even close.

The Piramides EXTRA is… well, it’s complicated. And that’s exactly why I love it.

First Light: Reality Check Time

My first encounter with this cigar was back in ’09 at a little shop in Montreal – can’t remember the name now, but the owner, Jacques, swore by these. He handed me one with this knowing smirk and said, “This one’s different, mon ami.” Cocky bastard was right.

The construction hits you immediately. This isn’t some delicate flower – it’s a substantial torpedo that feels dense without being overpacked. The wrapper’s usually got that classic Cohiba sheen, but here’s where it gets interesting: the flavor profile starts wandering off the reservation almost from the first puff.

Where your typical Cohiba Robusto or Esplendido might ease you in with that familiar creamy-woody signature, el piramide comes out swinging. There’s an earthiness right up front that’s almost aggressive – not in a harsh way, but in a “pay attention to me” way. It reminds me of walking through a tobacco barn in the Vuelta Abajo after a rain.

The draw? Usually perfect. I’ve had maybe two duds in all my years with this vitola, which is saying something given Cuban quality control can be… let’s call it “inconsistent” some years.

The Flavor Journey (Or: How This Cigar Keeps You Guessing)

Now, most reviewers will break this down into neat little thirds – first third this, second third that. But smoking isn’t math, and this cigar sure as hell doesn’t follow a textbook progression.

What happens instead is more like a conversation with a really interesting person who keeps changing the subject. You’ll be cruising along, enjoying these rich, leathery notes (and I mean proper leather – not that synthetic stuff, but like the inside of a well-worn baseball glove), when suddenly there’s this mineral quality that jumps in. Almost chalky, but in a good way.

The thing about el piramide is that it doesn’t give you the classic Cohiba “luxury” experience. You know what I mean – that smooth, refined, “I’m smoking a $30 cigar” feeling. This one’s got more personality than that. More… how do I put this… more attitude.

Around the halfway point (and this varies depending on how you’re smoking it – more on that in a minute), you start getting these coffee notes. Not espresso, not cappuccino – more like really good cold brew that’s been sitting just long enough to develop some complexity. My buddy Martinez, who’s been smoking Cubans since before it was cool, always said this cigar tastes like “Saturday morning in Havana,” and honestly? That’s not far off.

The retrohale – if you’re into that sort of thing – brings out some spice that’s not really present on the palate. It’s subtle though. Don’t expect a Padron Anniversary Series kick in the face.

Here’s where it gets really interesting: the final portion doesn’t follow the rules. Most cigars either maintain their character or build to some crescendo. The Piramides EXTRA does this weird thing where it almost… simplifies. The complexity doesn’t build – it distills. You’re left with this pure, clean tobacco flavor that’s somehow both rich and delicate.

What I Actually Drink With This Thing

Forget what the pairing charts tell you. I’ve tried this cigar with everything from Macallan 18 to cheap rum, and here’s what actually works:

Coffee: Specifically, a good Cuban coffee if you can get it. I’ve got this little espresso setup at home, and when I can score some Cubita or Serrano beans, it’s magic with el piramide. The earthiness plays off each other perfectly.

Rum: But not what you’d expect. Skip the fancy aged stuff – Havana Club 3 Year actually works better than the Selección de Maestros. Something about the rawer sugarcane notes.

Water: Yeah, I said it. Sometimes the best pairing is just good water. This cigar’s got enough going on that you don’t need to complicate things.

I tried it with scotch once (Lagavulin 16, if you must know), and it was a disaster. The smoke dominated everything, which isn’t what you want from a $200 bottle of whisky.

Storage Notes (The Stuff Nobody Talks About)

Here’s some insider knowledge that’ll save you heartbreak: these cigars are temperamental about humidity. I keep my humidor at 65% for most of my Cubans, but the Piramides EXTRA actually smokes better at around 62-63%. Any higher and you lose that mineral quality I mentioned.

Also – and this might be controversial – I think these benefit from a little age, but not too much. I’ve got some from 2015 that are smoking beautifully right now, but I had a few from 2008 last year that had lost something. That aggressive earthiness had mellowed too much.

Box date matters more with these than with other Cohibas. I don’t know why, but it does.

Who Should Smoke This (And Who Shouldn’t)

If you’re new to Cubans, skip this one. Start with a Robusto or maybe an Esplendido. El piramide isn’t forgiving, and it’s not trying to make friends.

This is for the guy (or gal) who’s smoked enough cigars to have opinions. Who’s not impressed by the band anymore. Who wants something that’ll challenge them a bit.

It’s also perfect for those times when you want a Cuban but you’re tired of the same old Cohiba experience. When you want something familiar but not predictable.

Don’t smoke this if you’re looking to relax. It demands attention. I made the mistake of lighting one up during a football game once – completely wasted it because I wasn’t paying attention to what was happening in my mouth.

The Controversial Take

Here’s where I’m probably going to catch some heat: I think the Piramides EXTRA is actually a better cigar than the Esplendido. There, I said it.

The Esplendido is a great cigar, don’t get me wrong. It’s the flagship for a reason. But it’s almost too polished, too perfect. It doesn’t take risks. The Piramides EXTRA takes risks, and sometimes that means it’s not what you expected. But when it works – and it usually does – it’s more interesting than its famous big brother.

I’ve had this argument with collectors who think I’m crazy, but I stand by it. Character beats perfection every time.

Common Questions (Because People Always Ask)

How long does it smoke? Usually about 90 minutes to two hours, depending on your pace. Don’t rush it – this isn’t a cigar that rewards speed.

Is it worth the price? That depends on what you’re comparing it to. Against other Cohibas? It’s reasonably priced. Against non-Cubans? Well, you’re paying the Cuba tax, but if you want this particular experience, there’s no substitute.

Can I age these? You can, but don’t go crazy. Five to seven years seems to be the sweet spot. Beyond that, you’re gambling.

What’s the best time of day for this? Late afternoon or early evening. This isn’t a morning cigar, and it’s too intense for after a big dinner.

Final Thoughts

The Cohiba Piramides EXTRA isn’t going to be everyone’s cup of tea, and that’s exactly why I respect it. In a world where too many cigars are designed by committee to offend nobody, el piramide has the courage to be itself.

It’s not the most complex Cuban I’ve ever smoked, and it’s certainly not the smoothest. But it’s honest in a way that a lot of premium cigars aren’t. When you light one up, you know exactly what you’re getting – no false advertising, no pretense.

If you’ve been smoking Cubans for a while and you’re looking for something a little different, give this one a shot. Just don’t expect it to behave like every other Cohiba in your humidor. That’s the whole point.

And if you don’t like it? Well, that’s what makes this hobby interesting. We don’t all have to agree.

But trust me on the humidity thing. 62-63%. You’ll thank me later.
