The wrapper on these Secretos is something else entirely. It’s this gorgeous, dark maduro leaf that’s practically gleaming with oils. Cuban tobacco at its finest, no doubt about it. When you pick one up, there’s a weight to it that surprises you – these aren’t loose-packed speed smokes. The construction is absolutely flawless every single time I’ve had one (and trust me, I’ve had plenty).
The cold draw gives you hints of what’s coming: rich chocolate, maybe some coffee notes, and this underlying sweetness that’s distinctly Cuban. It’s funny how the por larranaga secretos used to be my go-to short smoke before I discovered these Cohibas. The Por Larrañaga had this elegant simplicity that I loved, but the Maduro 5 Secretos? Here’s where I’m gonna diverge from those typical reviews that break everything down into neat little thirds. Screw that. This cigar doesn’t smoke in thirds – it evolves constantly, almost restlessly, from the moment you light it until you’re burning your fingers trying to get one last puff.
The opening is all about that maduro sweetness – think dark chocolate with just a hint of molasses. But it’s not cloying or one-dimensional. There’s this underlying earthiness that grounds everything, keeps it from being dessert-like. Maybe ten puffs in, you start getting these waves of espresso and leather. Not harsh leather – more like a well-worn baseball glove.
The beauty of this cigar is how it layers flavors instead of just transitioning from one to another. So you’ve got the chocolate thing happening, but then you’ll get this flash of cedar. It’s like giving a 25-year-old Macallan to someone who’s never had anything but Jack Daniels – they’re just not gonna appreciate what they’re tasting.

- Anyone who’s ever thought short cigars can’t be complex
- People who love maduro wrappers but want something more refined than your typical maduro
- Business smokers who need something impressive but don’t have 90 minutes to kill

- You prefer Connecticut wrappers and light flavors
- You’re not comfortable with medium-full strength cigars
- You’re on a tight budget (let’s be real, these aren’t cheap)
Storage and Handling (The Stuff They Don’t Tell You)
Because of that beautiful maduro wrapper, these are more sensitive to humidity than your average stick. I keep mine at 65% RH, maybe 66% max. Any higher and that wrapper starts getting too oily, too soft. Trust me on this – I’ve ruined more than one by storing them too wet.
Temperature matters too. These don’t like heat fluctuations. I learned this lesson during a particularly hot summer when my cooling system went out. Came back to find the oils in the wrappers had basically migrated, leaving some cigars with dry spots and others oversaturated.
Also, and this might sound weird, but let them rest after you buy them. Even if they come from a reputable dealer (and if you’re buying these, you better be using a reputable dealer), give them at least a week in your humidor before smoking. The flavors marry better, the burn becomes more even, everything just works better.

Here’s where I’m gonna ruffle some feathers: I think these are better than the regular Cohiba line. Yeah, I said it. I’ve had Behikes, Esplendidos, the whole range, and dollar for dollar, experience for experience, these Maduro 5 Secretos deliver more satisfaction than cigars costing three times as much.
Maybe it’s the format – there’s something to be said for a perfectly executed short smoke versus a long smoke that overstays its welcome. Maybe it’s the maduro wrapper bringing out flavors that get lost in lighter wrappers. Hell, maybe I’m just getting old and my palate’s changing. But I’d rather smoke one of these than most of the “premium” long-format Cohibas.
(Don’t even get me started on the Cohiba Pyramid – overpriced, overhyped, and underwhelming. Fight me.)

Decent cigar but not my favorite from Cohiba. The Cohiba Maduro 5 Secretos has good flavor – nuts and caramel – but didn’t wow me like other Cubans I’ve had. Construction was fine, burn was mostly even. It’s good, just not exceptional. Worth trying though.
