About This Cigar
The Romeo y Julieta Churchill is named after Sir Winston Churchill, who was famously fond of this brand. Introduced in 1966, this iconic Churchill-sized cigar has become one of the most celebrated Cuban cigars worldwide, consistently rated among the best by Cigar Aficionado.
Tasting Notes
Complex and refined with notes of cedar, cream, leather, coffee, and sweet spice. The long smoking time allows flavors to develop beautifully, finishing with earthy depth and subtle strength.
Romeo y Julieta Churchill Cigars: The Cuban Legend That Actually Lives Up to the Hype
I’m gonna start with something that might ruffle some feathers – most “legendary” cigars are overrated tourist traps. But the Romeo y Julieta Churchill cigars? These beauties are the real deal, and I’ve been proving it to myself for the better part of two decades.
Look, I get it. Everyone and their uncle talks about these cigars like they’re the second coming. Winston Churchill supposedly smoked ’em, they’re named after the man himself, blah blah blah. Marketing gold, right? But here’s the thing that got me hooked back in ’04 when my mentor Carlos first handed me one outside that little shop in Miami – this cigar doesn’t need the marketing. It stands on its own merits.
First Impressions: Construction and Pre-Light
The first thing you notice about these Romeo and Julieta Churchill cigars isn’t the band (though it’s classic). It’s the feel. Hefty without being dense. The wrapper’s got this beautiful Colorado Claro shade – think coffee with just a splash of cream. Not too oily, not too dry. Just… right.
I’ve probably handled thousands of these over the years, and the construction consistency is what keeps me coming back. Sure, you’ll get the occasional dud (I’m looking at you, that disappointment from summer 2019), but we’re talking maybe one in thirty. That’s better odds than most marriages.
Cold draw? It’s generous but not loose. Gives you hints of what’s coming – cedar, maybe some barnyard earthiness that Cuban tobacco lovers know and crave. My buddy Mike always says it smells like “expensive leather and optimism.” He’s not wrong.
The Flavor Journey: Why I Don’t Believe in “Thirds”
Okay, controversial opinion time. I hate when reviewers break cigars down into neat little thirds. That’s not how flavor works, and it’s definitely not how these Churchill cigars smoke.
Instead, think of it like a good jazz performance. There are movements, sure, but they flow into each other. The flavors ebb and surge based on how you’re smoking, what you ate for lunch, whether it’s humid or dry, even your mood.
That said, here’s how these typically develop for me:
Right off the light, you get this beautiful creamy foundation. Not bland – creamy like really good butter or aged cheese. There’s pepper there too, but it’s not trying to punch you in the face like some Nicaraguans I could mention. It’s more like… a knowing wink.
About twenty minutes in (and these are slow smokers, don’t rush them), the cedar really opens up. Sometimes I get coffee notes, sometimes it’s more like dark chocolate. Depends on the stick, depends on the day. That’s part of the magic – these cigars have personality.
The middle stretch is where Romeo y Julieta Churchill cigars really earn their reputation. The complexity builds without getting muddy. I often pick up leather, some sweet spice (maybe cinnamon?), and this earthy backbone that screams “Cuban soil.” There’s a reason people make pilgrimages for this terroir.
Final third? Don’t let anyone tell you Cuban cigars can’t finish strong. The strength builds – not harshly, but definitively. The sweetness fades and you’re left with this beautiful interplay of earth, wood, and just enough nicotine to remind you why you fell in love with cigars in the first place.
What I Pair These With (And Why)
Here’s where I get specific, because generic pairing advice is useless. You want to know what actually works? What I’ve tested over years of smoking these beauties?
Coffee: Forget the fancy stuff. I pair these with Cuban coffee when I can get it, or a strong Colombian like Juan Valdez. The bitterness plays beautifully against that creamy base. Had one with a cortadito at Versailles in Miami back in ’09 that I still think about.
Rum: Obviously. But not just any rum. Havana Club 7 if you can find it, or Flor de Caña 12 if you can’t. The aged notes complement without competing. I’ve tried it with fancy XO rums, and honestly? Waste of money. The cigar gets lost.
Whiskey: This is where it gets interesting. Bourbon’s too sweet most of the time. Scotch can work – I like Macallan 18 if I’m feeling flush, or Glenlivet 15 for something more accessible. But my secret weapon? Irish whiskey. Redbreast 12 specifically. Don’t ask me why, just trust me on this one.
Beer: Yeah, I said beer. Not with the whole cigar – that’s madness. But a good porter or stout in the first half works beautifully. Founders Porter or Guinness Extra Stout. The roasted notes bridge the gap perfectly.
Who Should Smoke These (And Who Shouldn’t)
Let’s be honest about something – these aren’t beginner cigars. Not because they’re particularly strong (they’re medium-plus on most scales), but because they’re subtle. If you’re used to the in-your-face flavor bombs from Nicaragua or Honduras, these might seem boring at first.
Romeo and Julieta Churchill cigars are for people who appreciate nuance. Who don’t need every flavor shouted at them. If you’re the type who puts hot sauce on everything, maybe start with something else.
They’re perfect for:
- Experienced smokers looking for complexity without aggression
- Special occasions (though I smoke them regularly – life’s too short)
- Business meetings where you want to impress without being flashy
- Long conversations with good friends
- Anyone who wants to understand what Cuban cigars are really about
Skip them if:
- You’re new to cigars (work your way up)
- You prefer full-strength smokes exclusively
- You’re impatient (these require 90+ minutes to properly enjoy)
- You’re just buying them for the name recognition
Storage Tips and Insider Knowledge
Alright, here’s some hard-won wisdom about keeping these cigars happy.
Humidity: 65-68% RH. I know everyone says 70%, but Cuban cigars – especially these – perform better slightly drier. They burn more evenly, the draw stays consistent, and you get better flavor development. Trust me on this one.
Temperature: Keep ’em cool. 65-70°F if possible. I learned this the hard way after a summer power outage in ’12 ruined a whole box.
Aging: These can handle serious age. I’ve got some from 2015 that are smoking better now than they did fresh. The harsh edges (what few there are) smooth out, and the complexity deepens. If you can afford to sit on a box for 3-5 years, do it.
Here’s something most people don’t know – these cigars can handle seasonal changes better than almost any other Cuban I’ve smoked. The construction is solid enough that minor humidity swings won’t kill them. Still keep them stable, but don’t panic if your humidor fluctuates a few points.
The Controversial Truth About Authenticity
Let me address the elephant in the room – fakes. The market’s flooded with counterfeit Romeo y Julieta Churchill cigars, and some of them are getting scary good.
Here’s how to spot the real deals:
- The band should be crisp, not fuzzy. Colors should be vibrant.
- Real Cuban cigars have a specific smell – earthy, barnyard-y, sometimes a bit funky. Fakes smell generic or overly sweet.
- Construction should be firm but not hard. Fakes are often either too loose or packed like concrete.
- Price matters. If someone’s selling these for $15 each, walk away.
Buy from reputable sources. Period. I’ve been burned before (literally – smoked a fake that tasted like cardboard and regret), and it’s not worth saving a few bucks.
Common Questions I Get Asked
How long do these take to smoke?
Plan on 90 minutes minimum. I usually budget two hours. These aren’t cigars you rush – they punish impatience with harsh flavors and poor burn.
Are they worth the price?
Depends what you mean by “worth it.” At $25-35 per stick (depending on your source), they’re not cheap. But compared to other premium Cubans? They’re actually reasonable. And the experience… yeah, it’s worth it for special occasions.
How do they compare to non-Cuban Churchills?
Apples and oranges, honestly. Dominican and Nicaraguan Churchills can be excellent, but they’re different animals. These have that distinctive Cuban character – earthier, more subtle, less in-your-face sweet.
Should I age them?
If you can afford to, absolutely. But they’re also excellent fresh. Don’t let perfect be the enemy of good – smoke one now, age the rest if you bought a box.
Final Thoughts
Look, I’ve smoked a lot of cigars over the years. Some were forgettable, some were spectacular, most were somewhere in between. Romeo y Julieta Churchill cigars consistently land in that upper tier – not perfect (nothing is), but reliably excellent.
They’re cigars that reward attention and punish distraction. Light one up when you’ve got time to think, to talk, to just be present. Don’t waste them on busy days or stressful moments.
Are they the best Cuban cigars ever made? That’s not the right question. Are they excellent representatives of what Cuban tobacco can achieve? Absolutely. Are they worth your time and money if you’re serious about cigars? Without question.
Just… don’t smoke them because Churchill did. Smoke them because you appreciate craftsmanship, complexity, and that indefinable something that makes Cuban cigars special. And if you don’t like them? That’s fine too. More for the rest of us.
