About This Cigar
A premium Cuban cigar from Cohiba.
Tasting Notes
Rich, complex Cuban flavors with notes of earth, cedar, leather, and spice.
Taking My First Draw of the Cohiba Majestuoso 1966
The cedar’s just hit my palate and I’m already questioning why I waited so damn long to try this stick. I’m sitting here on my back porch in Miami – yeah, I know, smoking Cuban cigars in Miami feels a bit on the nose – but the Cohiba Majestuoso is demanding my full attention right now. This isn’t my usual evening smoke (that’d be a Partagás D4), but after finding a box of these beauties last month, I figured it was time.
Let me back up. I’ve been smoking cigars since ’98, back when you could still find decent Cubans without selling a kidney. The cohiba majestuoso has always been one of those “special occasion” cigars for me. Hell, I remember my first one was a gift from my brother-in-law after his wedding in 2007. Smoked it too fast, didn’t appreciate it properly. This time’s different.
First Impressions: The Build and Draw
Right off the bat, the construction on this particular stick is beautiful. The wrapper’s got that classic Cohiba smoothness – oily, rich coffee-colored leaf that feels substantial without being thick. No soft spots. Good weight distribution. The triple cap’s perfectly applied (though honestly, most Cohibas nail this part).
The pre-light draw gives me leather and earth, with just a hint of sweetness hiding underneath. Nothing revolutionary, but it’s clean and promising. I’m using my old Xikar cutter – the same one I’ve had for probably twelve years now – and it slices through cleanly.
Cold draw resistance is perfect. Not too tight, not too loose. You know that sweet spot where you don’t have to work for the draw but it’s not falling apart on you? That’s exactly where this cohiba majestuoso sits.
The Smoke: A Journey Worth Taking (Slowly)
I’m about fifteen minutes in now and the flavors are starting to develop properly. Started with that cedar I mentioned, but it’s evolving into something more complex. Getting coffee notes – not that bright, acidic stuff, but more like a dark roast that’s been sitting in the pot for an hour. Smooth, rich, slightly bitter in the best way.
The burn line’s razor straight. Ash is holding solid gray-white, which always makes me happy. Nothing worse than an expensive cigar that won’t stay lit or burns like a drunk person walks.
About a third of the way through, I’m picking up some spice on the retrohale. Not pepper bomb spice (looking at you, some Nicaraguans), but a gentle warmth that complements rather than dominates. There’s also this subtle sweetness creeping in that reminds me of honey, though that might be wishful thinking since I’ve got a glass of Zacapa 23 sitting next to me.
Mid-Point: Where Things Get Interesting
Here’s where the Cohiba Majestuoso really starts to show its personality. The coffee notes are mellowing out and I’m getting more earth and leather. Some barnyard funk too – and before you wrinkle your nose, that’s a good thing in Cuban cigars. It’s that distinctive terroir that you just can’t replicate anywhere else.
The draw’s still perfect, though I’m noticing I need to slow down. This isn’t a cigar you rush through while checking emails. It demands attention, rewards patience. When I focus and take slow, deliberate draws, the flavors really open up.
I’m also getting some of that classic Cuban hay note – dried grass, almost. It sounds boring when I describe it like that, but in context with everything else, it adds this natural, organic backdrop that makes the whole experience feel… authentic, I guess is the word.
Pairing Thoughts: What Works (And What Doesn’t)
I mentioned the Zacapa 23, and honestly? It’s working beautifully with this stick. The rum’s sweetness plays off the cigar’s earth tones without overwhelming the more subtle flavors. I’ve also tried this cohiba majestuoso with:
- Macallan 18 – excellent choice, though maybe a bit too rich for daytime smoking
- Café Bustelo (yeah, Cuban coffee with a Cuban cigar, sue me) – surprisingly good pairing
- Highland Park 12 – the smokiness complements the barnyard notes perfectly
- Don Julio 1942 – this was a mistake, too much competition between strong flavors
Coffee works great with this cigar, but skip the fancy stuff. A simple, strong Cuban coffee is perfect. The cigar’s got enough complexity that you don’t need some $20-a-pound single origin competing for attention.
Water’s important too. I keep a glass handy to cleanse my palate between draws. Some guys think this is overkill, but with a cigar this nuanced, I want to taste every transition clearly.
The Final Third: Sticking the Landing
We’re in the home stretch now, and this is where some cigars fall apart. Not the Majestuoso. If anything, it’s getting more interesting. The flavors are concentrating, becoming more intense without getting harsh. There’s definitely more spice now, but it’s balanced by this almost chocolate-like richness that wasn’t there earlier.
The burn’s still even (seriously impressive), and I’m able to take this down to about an inch without any harshness or overheating. That’s the mark of quality construction and good tobacco.
Temperature’s stayed cool throughout the smoke too. Sometimes with larger ring gauges you get temperature issues, but this one’s been consistent from first light to final draw.
Who Should Smoke This (And Who Shouldn’t)
Let’s be real for a minute. The cohiba majestuoso isn’t for everyone, and that’s perfectly fine. If you’re new to cigars, start somewhere else. This isn’t about snobbery – it’s about appreciation. You wouldn’t give someone a glass of Pappy Van Winkle for their first bourbon, right?
This cigar is for:
- Experienced smokers who appreciate subtlety over strength
- Cuban cigar enthusiasts (obviously)
- Anyone who enjoys the ritual and ceremony of a proper smoke
- People with patience and time – don’t rush this one
Skip it if you:
- Prefer powerhouse, full-strength cigars
- Want immediate flavor gratification
- Are looking for a quick smoke (this’ll take you 90+ minutes)
- Don’t appreciate earth and leather notes in your tobacco
And here’s my slightly controversial take: if you’re buying Cohibas to impress people, you’re missing the point entirely. These cigars earned their reputation through quality, not marketing. Smoke them because you appreciate what they offer, not because of the band.
Storage and Handling Tips
These cigars are finicky about humidity. I keep mine at 65% RH, which is lower than what some guys recommend, but I’ve found Cohibas smoke better when they’re not oversaturated. Too much humidity and you’ll get draw issues and muted flavors.
Give them time to acclimate if you’re getting them from a different climate. I let mine sit in my humidor for at least two weeks before smoking. Patience pays off.
Also – and this might sound obsessive – I rotate my Cohibas every month or so. The oils need to distribute evenly, especially in larger vitolas like the Majestuoso.
Age Matters
This particular stick had about three years of age on it, and you could tell. Young Cohibas can be harsh and one-dimensional. Give them time and they develop into something special. If you can find boxes with five+ years of age, even better.
Common Questions About the Cohiba Majestuoso
How long does it take to smoke? Plan on 90 minutes minimum, probably closer to two hours if you’re smoking it properly. This isn’t a lunch break cigar.
What’s the strength level? Medium to medium-full. It’s not going to knock you over, but it’s substantial enough to satisfy experienced smokers.
Are they worth the price? That’s subjective, but for special occasions? Absolutely. For everyday smoking? Probably not, unless money’s no object.
How do they compare to other Cohiba vitolas? More complex than the smaller sizes, but not as intense as something like the Behike line. It’s a sweet spot for the marca.
Should I age them? Yes, if you can exercise the patience. Five years seems to be the sweet spot for most Cuban cigars, Cohibas included.
Final Thoughts
I’m down to the final inch now, and honestly, I’m a little sad to see this smoke end. The cohiba majestuoso delivered exactly what I hoped for – complexity without confusion, richness without overwhelming strength, and that distinctive Cuban character that keeps me coming back after all these years.
Is it perfect? No cigar is. Could use a bit more sweetness in the middle third, and the price point keeps it in “special occasion” territory for most of us. But as an example of what Cuban cigars can achieve when everything comes together – the tobacco, the construction, the aging, the conditions – it’s pretty damn impressive.
Would I buy a box? If I had the cash lying around, absolutely. Will I keep one or two on hand for those evenings when I want something truly special? You bet.
The sun’s setting here in Miami, my glass is empty, and this cigar’s about done. Not a bad way to spend an evening, not bad at all.
