For decades the Cohiba Línea Clásica had no pyramid at all. Tapered cigars appeared only in special releases, such as the Reserva del Milenio and the Cohiba Piramides Limited Edition 2001. That changed in February 2012, when Habanos chose the Welcoming Night of the XIV Festival del Habano in Havana to present the Pirámides Extra, the first figurado to join the permanent Cohiba range.
The factory name is Pirámides Extra, a size made only for Cohiba: 160 mm long (6.3 inches) with a 54 ring gauge. It comes in the official Boîte Nature box of 10, and the band was redesigned for the launch with holographic detail. In its own announcement, Habanos described a format that “lends itself to special occasions due to its magnificent size.”
The name is simple. This cigar is a little longer and a little thicker than the classic Cuban pirámide, which gives the smoke more room to develop. Inside is the Línea Clásica blend of volado, seco and ligero leaves from San Juan y Martínez and San Luis in the Vuelta Abajo. The seco and ligero go through the extra fermentation that Cohiba reserves for its own tobacco, and that step is a big part of the smooth, rounded character the brand is known for. Habanos rates the strength as medium to full.
Critics have kept coming back to it. Cigar Aficionado has reviewed the Pirámides Extra many times since 2012, with scores of 94 points in 2023 and 95 points in its February 2025 issue. The 94 point review earned it a place at No. 16 in the magazine’s Top 25 Cigars of 2023, where the tasters called it “the most dynamic Cohiba we smoked in 2023.”
First third. No long warm up here. The tapered head delivers roasted chestnut and a dusting of cinnamon right away, with a light floral sweetness and a touch of toffee underneath. The draw is full and easy.
Second third. The cigar widens out. Almond paste and a little black pepper join the nutty core, and the oak that runs through so many Cohibas becomes more noticeable. Some cigars show a tangy, woody edge at this point.
Final third. Vanilla bean and a buttery sweetness come forward, with dried flowers and a gentle spice on the finish. It stays smooth to the end, so there is no reason to rush it.
Tasting notes shift slightly from box to box and with time in the humidor. The chestnut, almond and oak core is the part that shows up again and again.
A cigar this size gives you plenty of time with a drink, so pick something you enjoy sipping slowly.
Skip anything very peaty or very sweet. Both tend to cover the finer notes this cigar is known for.
The Piramides Extra suits the smoker who already knows Cohiba and wants a bigger, more evolving version of that classic flavor. Let the box rest in your humidor for a few days after it arrives. A steady 65 to 68 percent relative humidity and 64 to 68°F (18 to 20°C) keeps the wrapper supple and the burn even. Excellent cigar from Cohiba. The Cohiba Piramides EXTRA has a refined flavor profile - lots of cedar and cream. Draw was perfect and it burned for about 67 minutes. Only minor complaint is it's slightly strong for my taste, but overall a great smoke.
