About This Cigar

The Cohiba Medio Siglo was released in 2016 as part of Cohiba’s 50th anniversary celebrations. “Medio Siglo” translates to “half century.” It combines the ring gauge of the Siglo VI (52) with the length of the Siglo I (102mm), creating a unique short robusto format.

Tasting Notes

Concentrated flavors of cedar, cream, nuts, and spice. The shorter format delivers intense Cohiba character with earthy undertones and a satisfying, complex finish.

Cohiba Medio Siglo: When Smaller Really Is Better

I’ll never forget the first time I lit up a Cohiba Medio Siglo. It was 2014, sitting on the terrace of my buddy Carlos’s apartment in Miami Beach, watching the sun dip behind those art deco buildings. He’d just come back from a business trip to Switzerland (lucky bastard) and pulled out this stubby little robusto with that unmistakable yellow band. “Trust me on this one,” he said, sliding it across the table. I was skeptical – at the time, I was all about those big ring gauges, thinking bigger meant better. Man, was I wrong.

The Medio Siglo taught me something that night that I’ve carried with me through two decades of serious cigar smoking: sometimes the most concentrated flavor comes in the smallest packages. And when we’re talking about the medio siglo la original – not some knockoff or regional variant – we’re talking about one of Cuba’s most underrated gems.

First Impressions: Don’t Judge This Book by Its Cover

Let’s be honest here. The Medio Siglo isn’t going to win any beauty contests. At 4.3 inches with a 52 ring gauge, it looks almost… stubby. I’ve had friends dismiss it as “too small to bother with” or mistake it for a short robusto that got cut wrong at the factory. But that’s their loss, really.

The construction is typically flawless – this is Cohiba we’re talking about, after all. The wrapper usually shows that characteristic Cuban oily sheen (when it’s been stored properly), and the cap is applied with that precision you’d expect from the premium Cuban brands. The pre-light draw? Well, that’s where things get interesting.

I’ve noticed the cold draw on these can be a bit tighter than what some folks are used to. Not plugged, mind you, just… more resistant. Some people panic and reach for their draw tool, but I’ve learned to trust it. Nine times out of ten, once you get that first inch burning, everything opens up beautifully. That tenth time? Well, even Cuban rollers have off days.

The Smoke: A Masterclass in Concentration

Here’s where the Medio Siglo really shows its character. Unlike those marathon smoking sessions with a Churchill or Double Corona, this little guy gets straight to business. No warm-up period, no gradual build-up – from the first few puffs, you’re getting the full Cohiba experience.

The initial flavors hit you with that classic Cuban earthiness, but there’s something more refined here than you’d get from, say, a Partagás or even a Romeo y Julieta. It’s like the difference between a really good bourbon and a premium single malt – both are whiskey, but one’s got layers the other just can’t match.

About halfway through (which comes faster than you’d think with this vitola), the flavors start to intensify rather than change. This isn’t a cigar that’s going to take you on a wild journey from cedar to leather to chocolate. Instead, it’s going to take those core Cohiba flavors – that distinctive nuttiness, the subtle spice, that underlying sweetness that Cuban tobacco does so well – and just keep turning up the volume.

By the final third, if you’ve been smoking it right (and by “right” I mean not puffing like a freight train), you’re getting flavors so concentrated it’s almost overwhelming. I’ve had experienced smokers put these down with an inch left because the intensity caught them off guard. That’s not a bug, that’s a feature.

The smoke production is generous for such a small cigar. I’ve smoked these indoors (back when you could still do that sort of thing) and filled a room just fine. The ash holds well – usually to about an inch before it needs attention.

What I Pair It With (And What You Shouldn’t)

Over the years, I’ve tried pairing the Medio Siglo with just about everything you can imagine. Some combinations work. Others… don’t.

My go-to pairing? A really good aged rum. Specifically, I’m talking about something like a Zacapa 23 or, if you can get your hands on it, a Havana Club 15. The sweetness complements that underlying Cuban tobacco character without competing with it. Beer? Skip it with this one – the flavors are too delicate and complex to waste on a Stella or Corona.

Coffee works, but you’ve got to be careful. A heavy espresso will steamroll right over the more subtle notes. I’ve had good luck with a medium roast Colombian, served black. The acidity actually brings out some of the spice notes in interesting ways.

Whiskey is tricky territory. I know guys who swear by pairing these with a peated Islay scotch, but honestly? That’s just showing off. The peat smoke overwhelms everything else. If you’re going whiskey, stick to something smoother – maybe a Highland single malt or a good Kentucky bourbon. I’ve had excellent results with Maker’s Mark, actually.

One pairing that surprised me: dark chocolate. Not milk chocolate, and definitely not some gas station candy bar. I’m talking about the good stuff – 70% cacao or higher. Take a small piece, let it melt on your tongue, then take a draw. The combination is… well, let’s just say it’s worth the experiment.

Who Should Smoke This (And Who Shouldn’t)

Here’s where I might ruffle some feathers, but I’ve got to be honest about who this cigar is really for.

If you’re new to cigars, skip the Medio Siglo for now. I don’t care what the guy at the cigar shop told you about “starting with the best.” This isn’t a beginner’s cigar. The flavors are too concentrated, too complex, and frankly, too expensive to waste on an undeveloped palate. Start with something milder and work your way up.

If you’re the type who needs to be smoking for at least an hour to feel satisfied, this isn’t your cigar either. The Medio Siglo is a 45-minute smoke, maybe an hour if you really take your time. It’s for people who appreciate intensity over duration.

So who should smoke it? Experienced smokers who want to taste what Cuban tobacco is really capable of when it’s concentrated into a smaller format. People who’ve worked their way through the Cohiba line and want to try something a bit different. Folks who have limited time but don’t want to compromise on quality.

I also recommend it for anyone who’s gotten tired of the “bigger is better” mentality that’s dominated the cigar world for the past decade or so. Sometimes smaller really is more sophisticated.

Storage and Handling: A Few Hard-Learned Lessons

Let me save you some heartbreak here. The Medio Siglo, like most Cuban cigars, is particular about storage. But it’s especially sensitive to humidity fluctuations because of that shorter format.

I learned this the hard way about five years ago. Had a box stored at about 65% humidity (which works fine for most of my collection), but when I went to smoke one after a few months, the wrapper started cracking right at the band. Turns out these little guys prefer things a bit more humid – I keep mine at around 68-70% now, and haven’t had a problem since.

Temperature matters too. I’ve had boxes that were stored too warm where the oils started separating and you’d get these weird oily spots on the wrapper. Not the good kind of oily sheen – the kind that tells you something’s gone wrong.

Here’s something most people don’t think about: rotation. Because these are shorter cigars, they don’t need as much aging time as a Churchill or Double Corona. I’ve found they’re actually at their best between 6 months and 2 years of proper storage. After that, you start losing some of those brighter notes that make the Medio Siglo special.

And please, for the love of all that’s holy, don’t put these in your freezer to “kill beetles.” If you’re worried about tobacco beetles (and you should be, with Cuban cigars), get them properly treated by someone who knows what they’re doing.

The Controversial Take: Why Medio Siglo Beats Some Cohibas That Cost Twice as Much

Alright, here’s where I’m probably going to tick off some collectors, but it needs to be said: the Medio Siglo delivers a better smoking experience than some of the more expensive and “prestigious” Cohibas out there.

I’ve smoked the Behike line. I’ve had the Maduro 5. I’ve even been lucky enough to try some of the ultra-limited releases that sell for ridiculous money at auction. And you know what? Half the time, I’d rather have a Medio Siglo.

Why? Because it’s honest. It’s not trying to justify a $50+ price tag with exotic tobaccos or fancy bands or marketing hype. It’s just really good Cuban tobacco, expertly blended and rolled, in a format that showcases what the blend can really do.

Don’t get me wrong – some of the premium Cohibas are absolutely worth the money. But if you’re looking for the best bang for your buck in the Cohiba line, and you want to taste what all the fuss is about without taking out a second mortgage, the Medio Siglo is your cigar.

Frequently Asked Questions

How long does a Medio Siglo take to smoke?

If you’re smoking it properly (which means not rushing), plan on about 45 minutes to an hour. I’ve stretched one to 75 minutes before, but that’s really pushing it.

Is it worth buying a whole box?

Depends on your budget and smoking habits. If you smoke cigars regularly and appreciate Cuban tobacco, yes. If you’re casual smoker or you’re not sure about the format, buy a few singles first. A whole box is an investment.

What’s the best way to cut it?

Straight cut, about 1/8 inch from the cap. I know guys who use V-cuts on everything, but with the Medio Siglo’s shorter format, you want maximum draw efficiency. Punch cuts work too, but you might find the draw a bit tight.

Are there fake Medio Siglos out there?

Oh, absolutely. And they’re getting better at faking the bands too. Buy from reputable sources, know what the real thing looks like, and when in doubt, don’t buy it. A fake Cohiba isn’t just disappointing – it can be downright dangerous.

How does it compare to other Cuban robustos?

It’s more refined than most, but also more expensive. If you’re used to Partagás Shorts or H. Upmann Half Coronas, the Medio Siglo is going to taste like a completely different category of cigar. It’s the difference between a good regional restaurant and fine dining.

The medio siglo la original remains one of my favorite cigars for when I want maximum flavor in minimum time. It’s not perfect – few cigars are – but it’s damn good at what it sets out to do. And in a world full of 60+ ring gauge monsters that take three hours to smoke, there’s something refreshing about a cigar that respects your time while delivering serious flavor.

Just don’t expect it to be like anything else in your humidor. The Medio Siglo plays by its own rules, and once you understand what it’s trying to do, you might find yourself reaching for it more often than those bigger, flashier sticks that used to impress you.
