The Robusto That Changed Everything

Look, I’ve smoked a lot of Cuban cigars in my time – and I mean a lot. But there are certain sticks that just hit differently, you know? The Partagas Serie D No. 2 from 2003 is one of those cigars. Here’s the thing – this isn’t just another Robusto in the Habanos lineup. This is the vintage that made me understand why people obsess over aged Cuban tobacco. I’m talking about a cigar that’s had two decades to evolve, mellow out, and develop flavors that fresh tobacco simply cannot produce. And I know this sounds dramatic, but if you’ve never experienced a properly aged Partagas D No. 2, you’re missing out on one of the defining experiences of Cuban cigar culture. This isn’t hype – this is the real deal.

Why This Cigar Deserves Your Attention

The Partagas brand dates back to 1845, and they’ve been rolling some of the most full-bodied cigars to come out of Cuba ever since. Founded by Don Jaime Partagás, the brand built its reputation on rich, earthy blends that don’t apologize for their strength. The Serie D No. 2 specifically? It’s been the flagship Robusto format since its introduction, and it’s consistently ranked among the top Cuban cigars by aficionados worldwide.

But here’s what gets me about the 2003 vintage specifically. This was before some of the quality control issues that plagued certain years in the mid-2000s. The tobacco from this era had time to properly ferment, and now – twenty years later – what you’re getting is a completely transformed smoking experience. The harsh edges have smoothed out. The pepper has mellowed into this sophisticated spice. The earth notes have deepened into something almost chocolatey. Thing is, this cigar appeals to both the seasoned smoker who appreciates complexity and the intermediate enthusiast ready to step up from milder offerings. Though I’ll be honest – if you’re brand new to cigars, maybe work your way up to this one.

The Smoking Experience – From Light to Nub

Okay, so let me walk you through what actually happens when you light up one of these beauties. The cold draw – and pay attention here because this tells you everything – gives you leather and cedar right off the bat. Not subtle hints. We’re talking about walking into a tack shop kind of leather. That exact smell. The draw resistance is perfect on most sticks from this era, though I’ve had maybe one in ten that ran a bit tight. Not a deal breaker, just something to note.

First third hits you with earth and pepper, but – and this is crucial – it’s not the aggressive pepper you get from fresh Partagas. No joke, I’ve had brand new Serie D No. 2s that almost knocked me back with their intensity. The 2003 vintage? The pepper is there, absolutely, but it’s woven into this creamy smoke that coats your palate. You’re getting cocoa undertones, some coffee bean character, and that signature Partagas earthiness that reminds me of wet tobacco leaves after a rainstorm. The burn is typically razor-sharp, and the ash holds for a solid inch to inch and a half before dropping – pure white with some gray streaking.

Real talk: the second third is where this cigar really shows you what aging can do. The flavors start evolving in ways that younger cigars just can’t match. The cedar becomes more prominent – think quality humidor cedar, not construction lumber. There’s this leathery quality that deepens, almost like a well-worn saddle. And then you get these waves of sweetness. Honey? Maybe. Dark caramel? Closer. It’s hard to pin down exactly, which is part of what makes it fascinating. The retrohale – if you’re brave enough – gives you white pepper and spice, but it’s smooth. Not harsh. That’s the age talking. Medium to full-bodied at this point, building gradually.

The final third is where opinions diverge, and I’m probably biased here, but I think this is where the 2003 vintage really shines compared to fresher stock. Instead of getting bitter or harsh like some full-bodied cigars do at the end, this one maintains that creamy character while the flavors concentrate and intensify. You’re getting more leather, more earth, a touch of black pepper coming back, but it’s all balanced. The strength ramps up to full, sure, but it’s not nicotine overload. I’ve smoked these down to the nub – burned my fingers a couple times because I didn’t want to let go – and never felt overwhelmed. The construction stays solid right through, no touch-ups needed if you’re smoking at a reasonable pace.

How Does It Stack Up?

Cigar Strength Smoking Time Best For
Partagas Serie D No. 2 (2003) Medium-Full 60-75 mins Experienced smokers wanting aged complexity
Romeo y Julieta Wide Churchill Medium 70-85 mins Those preferring milder, creamier profiles
Bolivar Royal Corona Full 55-70 mins Power smokers who want maximum strength

Between you and me, the Wide Churchill is a great cigar, but it doesn’t have the depth you get from an aged Partagas. And the Bolivar? It’ll knock you on your ass if you’re not ready for it. The D No. 2 from 2003 sits in this sweet spot where you get complexity without punishment.

What to Drink With This Beauty

I’ll be honest with you – I’m a bourbon guy, and this cigar pairs beautifully with a good Kentucky straight bourbon. Something like Woodford Reserve or even a higher-proof Maker’s Mark brings out the sweet notes without overwhelming the tobacco. The vanilla and caramel in the bourbon complement that creamy character perfectly.

That said, if you’re more of a rum person – and hey, it’s a Cuban cigar, so that makes sense – go for an aged rum. Flor de Caña 12-year or Zacapa 23. The molasses sweetness works surprisingly well. Coffee? Absolutely, especially a Cuban coffee or strong espresso. The roasted notes mirror what you’re getting from the tobacco.

As for occasions, this is an after-dinner cigar all the way. Maybe late afternoon if you’re having a lazy Sunday. I wouldn’t reach for this first thing in the morning – it’s got too much going on. Evening, after a good meal, when you’ve got an hour to kill and nowhere to be? That’s when this cigar shines. Speaking of which – I remember smoking one of these after a steak dinner in Miami, and, anyway, back to the point – timing matters with a cigar this complex.

Your Questions Answered

How does the 2003 vintage differ from current production Partagas Serie D No. 2?

The 2003 vintage has had twenty years to age, which transforms the smoking experience completely. Fresh Partagas D No. 2s are powerful, peppery, and can be quite aggressive – honestly, sometimes too much for me. The 2003 version has mellowed significantly. The pepper is still there but integrated into a much creamier, more complex flavor profile. You get developed notes of leather, cedar, and subtle sweetness that young cigars simply cannot produce. The harshness has been replaced with sophistication. It’s like comparing a young wine to a properly aged vintage – same DNA, completely different character.

Is this cigar too strong for intermediate smokers?

Here’s the thing – it depends on what you mean by intermediate. If you’ve been smoking medium-bodied cigars for a while and you’re ready to step up, the 2003 vintage is actually a better introduction to full-bodied Partagas than fresh stock. The age has smoothed out the rough edges. That said, if you’re still in the mild-to-medium range exclusively, maybe work your way up with something like a Hoyo de Monterrey Epicure No. 2 first. The strength builds from medium to full over the course of the smoke, so pace yourself, don’t smoke on an empty stomach, and you should be fine. I’ve introduced several friends to aged Partagas with this exact cigar, and most handled it well.

What’s the ideal humidity level for storing a 2003 vintage Partagas?

For aged Cuban cigars like this, I keep my humidor between 62-65% relative humidity. Not the standard 70% you see recommended everywhere. Here’s why – these cigars have already been aging for two decades, and they smoke better slightly drier. At 62-65%, you get better burn characteristics, cooler smoke, and the flavors are more defined. Too humid and they can taste muted or require constant relighting. Temperature-wise, keep them around 65-68°F if possible. I learned this the hard way after ruining some aged sticks by keeping them too wet. Trust me on this one.

How can I tell if a 2003 Partagas has been stored properly?

Look, this is crucial because poorly stored vintage cigars are basically expensive disappointments. Check the wrapper first – it should still have some oil present, not bone dry and cracking. The color should be consistent, rich brown without major discoloration or fading. Give it a gentle squeeze – it should have some give but spring back. If it feels spongy or rock hard, that’s a red flag. The foot should smell of tobacco, cedar, and earth – if it smells musty or like nothing at all, something went wrong during storage. And honestly? The best indicator is the source. If you’re buying from a reputable dealer who specializes in aged Cubans and can verify provenance, you’re probably okay. Random internet sellers with suspiciously perfect vintage stock? I’d be skeptical.

Will this cigar continue to improve with more age?

Hmm, how do I put this – at twenty years old, this cigar is already in its prime smoking window. Will it get better with another five years? Maybe marginally. But there’s a point of diminishing returns with cigar aging. I’ve smoked Cubans with 25+ years on them, and honestly, some had started to lose flavor rather than gain complexity. The 2003 vintage is right where you want it. My advice? Smoke them and enjoy them now. If you’ve got a box, sure, keep a few back for another five years and see what happens. But don’t wait forever thinking they’ll keep improving indefinitely. Between you and me, I’ve made that mistake before – waited too long and the cigars peaked while sitting in my humidor.

What makes the Partagas Serie D No. 2 so highly regarded?

The Serie D No. 2 has been a benchmark Robusto since it was introduced. It’s got the perfect dimensions – that 50 ring gauge gives you enough tobacco for flavor development without being a giant cigar. The length is ideal for an hour-long smoke. But the real reason? Partagas uses some of the richest, most full-flavored tobacco from the Vuelta Abajo region in their filler blend. The brand has always been known for earth, leather, and spice – they don’t make mild cigars, and they don’t apologize for it. The D No. 2 is the perfect expression of that philosophy in a format that’s accessible and consistently well-constructed. It’s appeared on Cigar Aficionado‘s top-rated lists multiple times over the years. And I genuinely don’t understand why more people don’t talk about how well these age compared to other marcas.

What time of year is best for smoking a vintage Partagas?

I’m probably biased here, but I think fall and winter are ideal for this cigar. The fuller body and rich flavors match up perfectly with cooler weather. That said, I’ve smoked these on summer evenings and enjoyed them just fine – you just need to pace yourself and stay hydrated. The leather and earth notes seem more appropriate when there’s a chill in the air, you know? Pair it with bourbon by a fire pit in October? Perfection. But honestly, if you’ve got one of these and it’s July, don’t wait. Life’s too short to save cigars for the perfect moment that might never come. I learned that lesson when a buddy of mine passed away with a humidor full of aged Cubans he’d been saving for special occasions.

Final Thoughts From the Lounge

The Partagas Serie D No. 2 from 2003 represents something special in the world of Cuban cigars – a perfect storm of quality tobacco, excellent construction, and patient aging. You’re getting the signature Partagas strength and flavor profile, but refined and elevated by two decades of rest. The earth, pepper, leather, and cedar notes are all there, woven together with a creamy smoothness that fresh tobacco cannot match.

If you’re serious about Cuban cigars – I mean really serious – you owe it to yourself to experience what proper aging can do. This isn’t just another smoke. This is the cigar that’ll make you understand why people invest in aged vintage boxes. Not gonna lie, every time I light one of these up, I’m reminded why I fell in love with Habanos in the first place. Don’t wait on this. Vintage stock like this doesn’t last forever, and once it’s gone, you’re stuck waiting another twenty years for the next batch to catch up.
