About This Cigar
A premium Cuban cigar from Romeo y Julieta.
Tasting Notes
Rich, complex Cuban flavors with notes of earth, cedar, leather, and spice.
Romeo y Juliet 2013: A Memory Lane Smoke That Almost Didn’t Happen
I’ll never forget the first time I lit up a Romeo y Juliet 2013. It was December 2019, and I was sitting on my buddy Carlos’s back porch in Miami – you know, one of those perfect Florida evenings where the humidity actually feels good for once. We’d been saving this stick for nearly six years, and honestly, I was starting to wonder if we’d waited too long. Sometimes anticipation can kill a cigar before you even light it.
But damn, was I wrong about that.
See, the romeo y juliet 2013 Edición Limitada isn’t your typical RyJ. This isn’t the mild, approachable Romeo that your uncle keeps in his desk drawer. This is Romeo after he spent some time in the gym, if you catch my drift. The blend uses tobacco from the Vuelta Abajo region that was aged specifically for this release, and you can taste every month of that patience.
First Light: When Expectations Meet Reality
The construction on mine was flawless – and I mean flawless. The wrapper had this gorgeous reddish-brown hue that practically glowed in the evening light. Carlos kept joking that it looked too pretty to smoke (he says this about every premium stick, the guy’s got commitment issues with cigars).
The cold draw? Rich molasses and cedar, with just a hint of that barnyard funk that tells you this tobacco has some stories to tell. Not too tight, not too loose – Goldilocks would’ve approved.
Lighting was smooth as silk. No touch-ups needed, which honestly surprised me given how long this thing had been sitting in my humidor. The burn line stayed razor-straight for the first inch, and the ash held on like it was auditioning for a magic show.
The Flavor Journey (Or How I Learned to Stop Worrying and Love Cuban Complexity)
Look, I’m not gonna break this down into rigid thirds like some textbook. That’s not how cigars work, and it’s definitely not how this romeo y juliet 2013 worked for me.
The opening was all about the wood – cedar primarily, but with these deeper oak notes that reminded me of the bourbon barrels at my local distillery. There’s this creamy texture to the smoke that coats your palate without being heavy. It’s sophisticated stuff.
About an inch in, things got interesting. The molasses from the cold draw started playing a bigger role, but it wasn’t sweet – more like blackstrap molasses with a mineral edge. My palate was picking up leather too, the kind of rich, supple leather you’d find in a well-worn baseball glove (not the harsh, tannic leather you get in some overpriced Dominicans).
The middle portion? That’s where this cigar earned its reputation. Coffee notes started creeping in – not your morning Folgers, but more like a dark espresso with chocolate undertones. The strength ramped up noticeably here, and I was glad I’d had a decent dinner beforehand. This isn’t a morning smoke unless you’ve got an iron stomach.
The final third threw me a curveball. Instead of getting harsh or bitter like some full-bodied sticks do, the romeo y juliet 2013 actually mellowed out while maintaining its complexity. Earth and spice became the dominant players, with this lovely white pepper finish that lingered for a good ten minutes after I set it down.
What I Paired It With (And What I Wish I Hadn’t)
That first smoke with Carlos? We were drinking Flor de Caña 18-year rum, and it was a match made in heaven. The rum’s vanilla and caramel notes played beautifully with the cigar’s molasses character without competing.
I’ve since tried it with various spirits, and here’s what works:
- Aged rum (obviously) – try Diplomatico Reserva Exclusiva if you can find it
- Peated Scotch – Ardbeg 10 was surprisingly good, the smoke complemented the cigar’s earthiness
- Dark coffee – but only if you’re smoking in the afternoon, not evening
- Port – a vintage tawny if you’re feeling fancy
What didn’t work? I tried it with a craft IPA once (don’t ask me why, I was feeling experimental), and the hops absolutely murdered the cigar’s subtlety. Bourbon was okay but not great – too much competition in the wood department.
Who Should Smoke This (And Who Definitely Shouldn’t)
Let’s be real here – the romeo y juliet 2013 isn’t for everyone, and that’s perfectly fine. This is a cigar for people who’ve been around the block a few times. If you’re still working your way through Montecristos and finding them challenging, save your money and come back to this in a year or two.
This is perfect for:
- Experienced smokers who want to explore Cuban complexity
- Anyone who enjoys full-bodied cigars but wants something more nuanced than a Partagás Serie D
- Collectors looking for something special (these are getting harder to find)
- People who appreciate the difference good aging can make
Skip this if:
- You prefer mild to medium cigars
- You’re looking for something to smoke quickly (this deserves at least 90 minutes)
- You’re tight on budget – there are better value plays out there
Storage and Smoking Tips (The Stuff They Don’t Tell You)
Here’s something that might be controversial: I think these smoked better at 65% humidity than the standard 70%. I kept mine at 65% for about six months before that first smoke, and the burn was absolutely perfect. At 70%, I found they could get a bit spongy.
Temperature matters too. Don’t smoke these when it’s blazing hot outside – you’ll miss half the flavor complexity. I prefer them in cooler weather, maybe 60-75 degrees. The flavors seem to develop better when you’re not sweating your ass off.
One more thing – let these rest after shipping. I don’t care how anxious you are to try one. Give them at least two weeks in your humidor to recover from the journey. Trust me on this.
The Reality Check (Because Someone Has to Say It)
Look, I’m gonna level with you here. Are these worth the premium price? That depends entirely on what you’re looking for. If you want the absolute best bang for your buck, probably not. You can smoke a lot of excellent cigars for what one of these costs.
But if you’re looking for something special – a cigar that represents Cuban craftsmanship at its peak, with tobacco that was specifically selected and aged for this release – then yeah, it’s worth every penny. Just don’t expect to smoke these every weekend.
I’ve got three left in my collection, and I’m probably gonna hold onto them for another few years. These have the structure to age beautifully, and I’m curious to see how they develop.
Frequently Asked Questions About the Romeo y Juliet 2013
How long should I age these before smoking?
They were excellent fresh (well, as fresh as you can get an EL from 2013), but I think the sweet spot is 3-5 years of additional aging. The tobacco was already well-aged when they made these, so you’re not gonna ruin them by smoking one now.
Are these stronger than regular Romeo y Julieta cigars?
Absolutely. If you’re used to RyJ Churchill or Wide Churchill, these will surprise you. I’d put them at medium-full to full strength, depending on your tolerance.
What size vitola was used for the 2013 EL?
The romeo y juliet 2013 EL came in a Robusto Extra format – 5.5″ x 50 ring gauge. Perfect size for the blend, in my opinion. Gives you enough smoking time to appreciate the complexity without overstaying its welcome.
How do these compare to other Romeo y Julieta ELs?
I’ve smoked most of the RyJ Edición Limitadas over the years, and this one’s in my top three. The 2009 was good but not great, the 2006 was phenomenal (if you can still find them). The 2013 strikes a nice balance between power and finesse that some of the others missed.
At the end of the day, the romeo y juliet 2013 is one of those cigars that reminds you why Cuban tobacco has such a reputation. It’s not perfect – nothing is – but it’s damn close to what I want from a premium smoke. Complex, well-made, and memorable. Just don’t expect to make it your daily driver unless you’ve got deeper pockets than most of us.
